Beside Florence, where you should stay a few days, you should take a day trip to other towns: Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena etc.

Search for accommodation with air conditioning, buy something against mosquito's.

Enjoy!

go and see lucca! it is a wonderful city! what more....if you have time travel down to sienna and if there is even more time do a bit of walking in the cinque-terre.

try to avoid hotels - stay in 'agro-tourismo' instead. they are sort of B&B's italian style. they are usually cleaner and cheaper and as they are family run you'll get in contact with the locals pretty easily and you'll learn a lot about the ppl and the country!
you will feel really welcome in italy if you stay in those places! just search the net for adresses...

then: be careful if you have a car: italian drivers are nuts!

as you go in august make sure to take sunscreen :o)
it gets really hot and you might not be up to to do much....get up early - have an afternoon nap and go out at night...
enjoy the lovely food, don't gain too much weight and most of all: enjoyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Most Italians are on vacation the whole month of August so you may find a lot of smaller places closed down for the month unless you stay in a touristy area. Tuscany has so many beautiful things to see. Most people have already mentioned some of the nice cities. I enjoyed staying in a small town outside of Lucca where I had a beautiful view, lots of sunshine and peace and quiet. The food and wine and ice cream are all excellent so be prepared to gain a few pounds/kilos unless you're doing a lot of exercise! There are many small guide books (check travel section of your local book store or Amazon.com) for Italy. They give you tips on the local holidays, open and closing times of shops, banks, restaurants, etc. as well as some basic language tips to get around. You may want to at least learn the Italian words for basic food items since most menus are only in Italian. It is a great place to visit and relax and enjoy the laid-back Italian culture. Enjoy your trip.

My best advice is not to make plans.... A week is short ( you will understand what I mean when you get there ) but Tuscany was made to go through slowly. Enjoy and make sure you enjoy the wines, food, and scenery.
Florence, Sienna and Assisi are a must to visit, but the small villages and the country side is not to be missed.
When in Italy, take it slow and enjoy everything around you. You miss alot in a blink of an eye.
