I wish I had taken more money. I wish I had slept more on the plane and had more rest before I left. The hotels have no washcloths....just towels so i wish I had taken one....I did not learn much Italian before I went....they speak a lot of English so it was easy...I learned to ask for two cappicino's before I left though! The food is bland the further north you go....spicy stuff we eat in the states is more promenent in the south. I ate gelato every day and you should to. I loved Florence and I would hire a tour guide for Florence and stay as long as you can. The Uffizi museum is awesome. No matter where you are, keep your money and your ID in a pouch that you carry inside your body near your chest. If you have a backpack...safety pin the zippers to the cloth or lock them with a small lock so they can not be oppend. They have the worlds sneakiest pickpockets and they are RAMPANT. If you are in a crowd of people, put your backpack on Backwards so that it is in FRONT of you. Do not trust cute kids. They will steal you blind. |

Many Italians speak English relatively well so you should not have many problems with the language. However, you can learn some greetings such as salve (hello), arrivederci (goodbye), and per favore (please). Try not to dress too much like a tourist - i.e. shorts and baggy t-shirts - because appearance is extremely valued in Italy. =)
Favorite city: Rome all the way. It's incredible.
Favorite food : pasta carbonara! |

My favorite city, in the entire world - Venice. It is so fabulous it is almost impossible to describe.
Favorite food? All of it. I adore Italian food, although I prefer northern, Tuscan and Veneto to Roman. The other writer is correct you must eat Gellato every day. Sometimes twice a day.
Do not pack too much. One suitcase only, and not too heavy. Take 2 pairs of shoes that are already broken in and rotate them every day. You will walk until your feet turn to nubbins and look at art until your eyeballs fall out and roll around on the ground.
Take extra memory cards for your camera. Be polite and say grazie to everyone. Most people speak english to a certain extent, however signs are almost all in Italian.
Remember, it's an adventure you won't forget for the rest of your life. |

I wish I had learnt a bit more about Rome as I felt it was the only city i visited (anywhere) where I did not go feeling prepared and embarrasingly missed the significance of a few places eg Roman Forum and Trevi fountain.....i literally stumbled upon them and thought....hmm interesting and took a couple of photos and walked on!
Anyway I pretty much got by with about 3 words ( although i knew a little french and was able to get the gist of some things). I guess its polite to know hello, goodbye and thankyou.
Favourite food was this amazing gelato in Venice ( someone had told me about this place in a back street)...OMG!! I still think about it!
Favourite city....hmm tough one I would say Florence, but there are some wonderful places. |

I lived in Italy for some time and will say this much, I'm not sure if you are American, I am, but please don't act like a typical American tourist. Dress down and try to blend in, and yes, many do speak English, but at least try to speak the language, even just basic stuff, hello, goodbye, thank you and the best, parla inglese? (do you speak english?) Even doing that will make a huge difference in how people will treat you. If you go to Rome and visit the Vatican, beware the gypsies.
My favorite city is Venice, absolutely beautiful. |

One thing I didn't really know when I moved to Italy was the parking "attendants." (they aren't really attendants, you know) I hated having to pay to park!!! But, we brought our BRAND NEW car and not a scratch...
Favorite Food: Spaghetti alla Norma (spaghetti with eggplant) yummmm
Favorite City: Catania...Cause I can drive in CT and not get lost or get in an accident. Plus, I know good parking spots, close to the centro. ^_^ And I love to walk around the centro..aha
*Plus, my daughter was born there!! ^_^ |
