Well your lecturer will be impressed if you talk about Goffredo Mameli
who in 1847 wrote the Italian National Anthem "Inno di Mameli" or also known as "Canto degli Italiani". You will find more here http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/italian-national-anthem.html about the Italian national anthem plus an English translation.

And what about the Ides of March? When Brutus and Cassius plotted and succeeded in assasinating Julius Caesar. You will find more here
http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/brief-history-of-italy.html for a brief history of Italy.

And you can mention the de Medici family from Florence who gave the Renaissance a big push - so big that they caused the popes from Rome to take notice (and compete).
Also great artists like da Vinci, Botticelli, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo etc. benefited from these investors and changed the face of cities like Florence and Rome.

Then there was Rome and the unification and Mussolini and his fascists. More here http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/history-of-rome-italy.html for the history of Rome Italy.

That should give you a little start!

Cristofolo colombo as they've already suggested would be perfect
then you should put some artist like Leonardo Da Vinci who was a great scientist but also writer and artist (la Gioconda, i hope you know it!)
then Galileo Galilei and his scientific discovers which gave the confirmation that the sun is in the middle of the sistem...and not the earth (as Coperinico first thought).
Michelangelo Buonarotti the artist (Cappella sistina at S.Peter church in Vaticano)
of course you MUST speak about Dante Alighieri who's still the most important italian writer! the "divina commedia" is studied in all the licei (kind of highschool) from the begging to the end! the italian language he used in his opera is amazing.
you could also talk about Machiavelli who was an important and maybe one of the first writer and theoretical of politic.
as they already suggested Mussolini would be important..
and enrico Fermi who first manage how to use radioactivity

for what concern the italians who are alive..
Sofia Lauren: the most important actress still alive...she won the Oscar
even Benigni won an Oscar an you could talk about him.
some other important people could be...
Berlusconi...as a politician and entrepreneur
maybe Agnelli (who's dead some years ago) and Briatore Flavio..

imhawda
Google!!!! omg how lazy!!

Current and modern
Mussolini- helped hitler
Silvio Berlusconi- current pm and business man, one of the world's most powerful

both politicians

Mike Buongiorno- TV idle a person every italian household knows about
TV and media is very important and particular in italy

Cristoforo Colombo- discovered america, he was the first to sail

Leonardo da vinci - genius, artist

Toto- mafia related also important in italian culture

Agnelli family - Ever heard of ferrari? make some reasearch on fiat co.

Vittorio Sgarbi - he is crazy but one of the top minds of italy, his knowledge and culture is incredible

Points- Politics very important in italy
TV- italians live in their tv and what's happening, curious about people, so entertainment, also reknown for their half naked beautiful girls on screen :)
Mafia- south italy it is an everyday lifestyle
Art and culture- italy is rich with art, they have had some of the best artists like da vinci, michelangelo, raffaello, poets like dante, petrarca.

the difference of north and south italy is important

And obviously - food and wine... they have some of the finest world's products, cheeses, hams, wines olive oil, balsamic vinegar.

with these points and some googling you can have an excellent project,
