Rome>Venice>Florence
Travel by train using the Eurostar(ES). Which is the fastest train you can take in Italy. And not necessarily more expensive than the other slower classes of trains if you use the 29/39 Eurostar Promotion where you can ride in 1st class for the cheap price of €29, if available.
Rome Termini station to Venice S Lucia station which is in Venice proper (Venice Mestre station is on the mainland) - 1st class on Eurostar for €29/adult, 4hr/33min trip, ES departures from Rome Termini at the following times: 08:55, 10:55, 12:55, 16:55, 18:55.
Venice S Lucia to Florence SMN station-
On the ES train it is a 2hr/49min trip. The 29/39 Eurostar promotion, however, does not apply for this leg. 2nd class is €26.60 and 1st class is €39.25. ES departures from S Lucia at the following times: 10:32, 12:32, 14:32, 16:32 and 18:32.

You can book your tickets over the internet or wait until you are in Italy.
Internet-
Travel 1st class for only 29 euros if available. If your plans are firm(it is cumbersome to get a refund), you can book using the "ticketless" option, you will get a PNR number and an e-mail from Trenitalia which you must show the conductor when he comes around and he will issue you a paper ticket. Don't lose your e-mail response. First register with Trenitalia for your user name and password. The password is case specific. If you don't see the e-mail response in your inbox, check your junkmail/spam folder. The 29/39 Eurostar seats in 1st and 2nd class are limited, since summer is high season, the seats may or may not be available when you arrive in Italy.
The promotion is in the drop down menu (click the arrow to the right of 'intera') "In Eurostar a 29 euro" and "In Eurostar a 39euro". Try the 29 euro price first. For class choose 1 for 1st class, highlight the seat position you want and leave the coach/seats boxes empty - Trenitalia will assign them for you. Regular fare = 'intera'. For regular fare seats there is not much difference between 1st and 2nd class unless you would like a little wider seat and more leg room which is offered in 1st class.
You can only book with Trenitalia 60 days in advance. You can also bring your favorite snacks, sandwiches, drinks with you on the train. The restaurant car is expensive and the food not so great.
In Italy-
You can book your 2 trips in Rome as well at: 1) Rome Termini station 2)the Italian travel agency- Agenzie 365 inside Termini next to the Trenitalia agents or 3) the American Express office to the right of the Spanish Steps, if you are looking up the steps. The travel desk is closed on the weekend. For the summer, I would get the tickets 3-5 days prior to your travel day.

If you are flying out of Rome in the morning to come back home, it would be a good idea to stay in Rome the night before. The early morning trains from Florence to Rome are not convenient to catch a morning flight! |

To move between cities, the train is your best bet - the train network in Italy (and throughout Europe) is excellent. Visit Trenitalia, the official Italian Train network's web site to see prices and to buy tickets online. The site has also discounts and special offers. I generally advise NOT to buy from a travel agency, but either online or directly at a local train station. And avoid traveling at peak hours to get better rates.
Also, if you're staying for a long period of time (15 days+) and plan to travel lots, check out the eurail site which gives you unlimited travel across Europe or within specific regions and countries. |

i think the best means of transport from one city to another is by train. There are three categories of trains as far as i know: inter-regional ones which are the cheapest if you're travelling to and from cities and towns in neighbouring regions, but they are the slowest! Then they have intercity trains which are ideal if you want to travel for example from rome to florence (for about 30euros). Finaly if you love speed then there's the eurostar trains, you travel in less time but you pay much more. For your specific trip i suggest you take an intercity from rome to florence then an interregional from fl to bologna (make a stop in b for a few hours cos its a nice place to visti) then take another interegional to venice. That way you get to see more and spend less! And another thing.. before taking a train make sure there're no strikes scheduled for that day! (can be quite frustrating) |
