Question for Italians? |
How do you feel about Italian-Americans and stereotypes? As in, you see on television the Rachael Ray types who act as if they are the quintessential Italian and movies such as The Godfather and all that, how does it feel seeing Italian-Americans and wannabe Italians (those who are like a drop Italian but talk and act as if they are one of them).
If you've visited the USA, have people ever assumed you to be one of those types? What would you in your own words say is the difference between Italians from Italy and life there versus Italian-Americans? |

I worked with a guy from Italy, we called him Coco cause his name was too long. But I'm Italian American and one day it came up in conversation with a few people. He said to me "You're not Italian, all these Americans thinking they are Italian when they're not" And I said you're right Coco, I'm not Italian, I'm Italian American.
Another time here in Philly, my roommate knew an Italian and he visited here and we went to south philly and he was honestly disgusted. He felt it was not the same culture and that everything was too American.
Generally I think Italians today look down on Italian Americans because the culture is pretty far removed. Italian Americans have generally taken the Italian culture and Americanized it. |

Born in Italy, living in Canada.
I think Italian-Americans are more Americans than Italians. Identifying themselves as Italian-Americans is just to give them acknowledge where their roots are.
All that literature and movies about mafia, coming from Italian-Americans make a disservice and create a stigma to the old country and Italian-Americans themselves.
Mafia is overrated and overstated as criminal activity, nevertheless it cannot be justified.
Italians in USA and elsewhere have proved over and over again that Italy is not just mafia and pizza.
While visiting USA I never happened to be assumed or implied as part of the organized crime.
As said before, Italian-Americans are fully integrated in the American way of life, while those in Italy live a different and in a different reality.
We can share the same background and the same roots, beyond that there is very little in common. |

Hi! I'm italian and I live in Rome.... I know that Italians are considered only for stereotypes in the other countries....they eat pizza and pasta and are "mafiosi" ( I don't know how to translate this word that means people like in the Godfather ) and I think it's wrong.... I think stereotypes are created by ignorance of people....I think it's a problem not just for italian peolple bur for everybody....because if you are foreing, you are of course tormented by stereotypes, everywhere you are and everywhere you are from! I hope you'll understand my English |
