Go to a bookstore and find the travel section. Look at all of the books there, and count how many you find on each country of the world. You will see that there are far more books about Italy than any other country.

The reason for this is in part because Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, but also because Italy, while a very small country, offers so much.

*ART*
Italy's contribution to the world of art can never be overstated. When you walk down streets there, you are so surrounded by art history, that you simply cannot digest all of it. It is overwhelming.

*FOOD*
Open up your phone book and look at the 'ethnic' restaurants in your hometown. How many are Italian versus others? It cannot be argued that Italian food is the most popular. It may not be your favorite, but it is the most popular. BUT KNOW THIS: You have not eaten Italian food until you have done so in Italy. The worst Italian restaurant in Italy is still better than the best Italian restaurant in America.

*HISTORY*
We are taught about 15 or 20 famous things to see in Italy, but we are not told about the tens of thousands that are there. They have thousands of years of civilization packed into a place less than half the size of California. It was the center of the Roman Empire! You can drive down the road and see 3,000 year old aqueducts peppered here and there next to the freeways. You can walk a trail and stumble on a 4,000 year old tomb. The history of the Etruscans, The Romans, The Roman Catholic Church... it is all centered there, my friends.

*STYLE*
I'm not just talking about clothing. I means style in every sense of the word. Italians have got it down pat! Clothing, Cars, Decor, etc. Think about it.. A tiny little country, but when you think of 'Italian Shoes', 'Italian Sports Cars', 'Italian Furniture', 'Italian Suits', etc, you are thinking of the best. Imagine being there and taking it all in first hand.

*CULTURE*
Italian culture is something truly mystical. They are a warm and friendly people, and most of them understand the meaning of life. When people ask me the fundamental difference between Italians and Americans, here is what i say:

An average American wakes up every morning, and the primary thoughts on his mind are: How much money will I make today, how will I make it, and how will I spend it.

An average Italian wakes up, and his primary thoughts are: What will I have for lunch and dinner today? Where will I have it, and who will I share the meals with?

This may sound crazy, but it is a fundamental truth. Which of those two people do you think will sleep better tonight?

A great reason to visit Italy is to have some exposure to that lifestyle. It helps ground you.

I have to add something to take into account Mario's comment below mine:
There is an exception to every rule, isn't there?

There is tons of history in Italy, the food is amazing, and the people there are really nice. Also it is very relaxing and an amazing experience. There is something to do for every type of person. If you like the loud crowded city, go to Rome. If you like to bike, rent a bike and ride around the wall in Lucca. I can't imagine anything greater than Italy!
