Rome's public transportation? |
How good and efficient is rome's public transportation?
I'm planning to visit Rome at 2-5 March 08..and currently i'm thinking to stay at Prime Hotels Roma Cassia,Via Barbarano Romano, 19, Rome since the price is reasonable. However I'm a little bit worried with the location since it seems like it's far from city centre. How long actually it will take to go to tourist attraction by public transportation in Rome? |

Hello,
Wow!!! This hotel is really far out. You can do better location wize if you try. Check out venere.com.
As for the transportation in Rome, it is quite good. There are two metro lines that cross the city including stops by the colosseum/forums, trevi fountain, piazza del popolo, the vatican and via cavour. If your hotel is by the metro stop (I couldn't find a map that showed a metro stop by the hotel you have chosen) you will be able to take it into the city center. Depending on where you get off you will have a very short walk. You might have to change lines in the termini station but that is very easy to do. This hotel looks about 20 minutes away from the vatican which is about 20 minutes (by metro with change of train) to the colosseum. As I suggested earlier, you can probably find a closer hotel for the same price.

The hotel looks somewhat pricy to me, but I haven't been to Rome in a while. Couldn't you find something around the Vatican, say, in the same general price range? There is a lot to be said to be able to walk out the door of your hotel and be right in the middle of things.
As you say, the hotel appears to be fairly distant from the City, but apparently on or quite near the subway. The website said 20 minutes by subway from St. Peter's, which itself is quite far from the Forum (which I regard as the Center of Rome).
The subways in Rome are very good, and you can get fairly near all the tourist attractions by subway or bus. I prefer the subway, as it's faster and easier to figure out which one to take. Buses in Rome can be confusing. One problem is that you cannot take the subway directly to the Forum, Capitoline Hill, etc., because of the ruins all around. So you'll have to take a bus, or get off and walk a ways. This should not be a problem unless you have health problems, as walking in Rome is, except for the tufa paving on some streets, quite enjoyable. |

I went to Italy two years ago, I stayed at the Michelangelo Starhotels, and found the service there to be impeccable. It was also only two blocks from St. Peter's Square! It was an amazing and I thought that all of the public transportation was excellent. It's very easy to simply catch a subway train, and my cousin (whom I was visiting while he was studying there) often took the bus. It was also easy to walk ANYWHERE from our hotel. We were able to walk all throughout the city, and really excperience the city's culture and history that way. |
