It does depends on peoples personality and intrests, as Italian i see Rome and Venice as two different worlds, Rome can be lived as a never sleaping metropolis and in general tourists under 50 go there to party and enjoy the nightlife, plus it can offers loads of cultural and international events, and loads of ancient world sites, two advantages of Rome compared to Venice is that if you dont hire a car and you want to go somewhere else in the country, Roma Termini station is the Trains Hub of Italy and you can get to the main the destinations without changing trains, and as it is located in the centre of the nation is very easy to reach other destinations, and dont forget the food and hospitality is better in Rome.

Venice is much smaller than Rome and i think the canals and the architecture are the only things to see, and it is not as caratteristic as Rome, it looks like the everage 200.000 people city in Central Europe,

When is Mum's birthday?
If you hit a very hot spell in Venice, the high humidity can be extremely enervating - last time we were there which was the end of June last, we spent most of our time in Air Conditioned bars because the humidity combined with the heat made it too miserable to do much.
Personally, I prefer Rome because you also have the Vatican City and the Church to visit, and that is within walking distance of things like the Trevi Fountain or there are taxis everywhere. The ruins are amazing.

I would recommend Rome. I had one of my most amazing holidays there, you do not need a car and some of the monuments are just amazing. My friends have had negative experiences in Venice (the gondola rowers really take advantage of tourists apparently) but as long as your parents are wise I am sure they would have a lovely time there also. I would go to Rome anytime.
There's a lot more to do and to see, and is less expencive.
Don't get me wrong, Venice is beautiful, but for 1 day trip, than becomes boring ,and if you happen to go there and don't want to spend a fortune, you have to sleep at Mestre than visit Venice.(still bring a lot money)

You don't need a car in Venice and it will not be as busy as Rome.
You can go everywhere by boat and if you want to visit the mainland you can take a train.
Just beware though that Venice is expensive and the food is terrible.

Well I've just gone 50 and I've been to both Rome and Venice. I would love to go back to Rome there is far more to see in Rome.

Venice is so charming and one of my top fav places to visit and very romantic, I stayed at the Metropole and loved it. Rome is also romantic with a lot to do and see and very interesting and requires lot of walking. I'd choose Rome for the food, shopping, history. I took a train down to Naples from Rome to visit Capri and it was a lovely vacation there also

Both Rome and Venice are wonderful and both deserve to be visited.
If your parents can stay just a weekend, I think Venice is better: it is much smaller and one can have a good idea in just two days (though four-five days would be better). To visit Rome a weekend is absolutely not enough.

I love Venice - very romantic and excellent for taking photos but if your mum's a Catholic she may prefer to go to Rome so she can visit the Vatican.

I would say Venice no doubt because rome is so busy and very hard to get around in. Venice is very beautiful and romantic it is so relaxing and full of stuff to see.

Elizabeth M
Venice is the most romantic city and it is so sad as the sea level is rising and some of the palaces along the Grand Canal are getting flooded. See it's beauty while you can!

♠ PACHA ♠
Venice is the most beautiful city in the world.
