i recommend staying in "town" and go during the day hours via foot or metro tothe other sights. this way when it's dark and not really "traveling time" you can take in St PEters adn the Borgo pio. however we got "stck" in travereste well after dark and walked back along the water, through home areas and such - no problems!!
since you've only three days i would recommend mapping things out for yourselves having gone through and written don - what you really feel you MUST see and go from there. with limited time and so much to see -- it helps, it really helps!!
