Safety in Florence? |
I am heading to Florence , Italy for a short trip. Being an asian and my 1st time there; what should I look out for in terms of safety? Will I be easily targeted since I am not local and look like a tourist from 1st sight??? |

I wouldn't worry about so much about being Asian and a tourist, I would worry more about keeping your belongings safe and being alert. The entire city IS tourists :o)
(Plus, there will be tons of other Asian tourists, and there are tons of Asian people that live in and around Florence as well).
Keep your bag close to your body - never keep your purse behind you or even at your side. Keep it in front of you - looks geeky but better safe than sorry. If your bag is at your side, it can be cut into and you would never feel it. Pick pockets on motos can even drive by and grab your purse from you. I've seen it happen - in the middle of a piazza!
Be wary of being too distracted.. while shopping, talking to friends, or taking in the scenery... this is what pick pockets look for... distraction.
Other than being pick pocketed... take the usual precautions.. don't accept drinks from a stranger, don't accept rides, be careful when walking around at night (use the buddy system!), and if you ever feel you are in danger, head into a store or busy area where someone can help you.
Other than that, Florence is a pretty safe place so I wouldn't worry too much. :o) |

Florence is generally safe but pay attention to your surrondings and be aware of the people near you. Don't trust blindly everyone and keep your valuable items and cash in different places. If you will bring a bag with you be always alert...I mean, behave like you would in any other busy and touristic city where bad people can mix with other people and tourists. |

You should be fine. Just watch out for "bait & grab" thieves, especially groups of Gypsy children. Pay attention to your belongings at all times. |
