the ideal is to visit rome&venice but you want a preference:
visit rome for the fantastic monuments and for the roman's objest for the colosseo. and because all street take to ROMA...

You can do both honestly. Venice is a really small city. You won't get to see every ally in Venice, but you will get a good idea. Stay in Rome and take a train to Venice early one morning. Make sure you take the Eurostar, it's a lot quicker. If I were you though, I would stay in Florence. I found Rome a lot of NYC in the 80's with really old buildings.

BOTH!! they are totally different...
if you enjoy larger, more urban places, with tons of clubs and restaurants (not to mention some pretty impressive historical sights/museums) then rome is for you!
however, if you enjoy romantic, relaxing, and more classical places, then venice is a perfect choice.
Rome is more fast paced, so if your looking for more relaxation choose Venice...
BUT in my opinion, you should go to both because they are only a few hours away from each other!!
have fun eating spaghetti :)

Haven is correct about Venice. I have traveled many times all over Italy, my favorite European country. If first time, Rome is where you want to go. In downtown is a hotel I stay, Hotel Alpi, and is within walking distance of all sights. Vatican City is a MUST see as well.

Florence is only a short train ride.

You should see both. Each is important for different reasons.

Go to Rome. Venice can smell bad, and its a pain to travel around because there is water everywhere. Plus, when you're taking a romantic ride on a gondola, you can see giant rats jump off the ground into the water. Kinda kills the mood.
