Should I pay a bus fine received while in Rome?

I got very confused by the system of purchasing bus tickets and ended up on a bus with out one, and was caught :( I was happy to buy the ticket and was NOT purposly trying to avoid paying.

When trying to explain this the transport police claimed it was obvious how to do it and tried to fine us E50 on the spot. We refused to pay them, and they have given us a fine of E100 to pay within 60 days.

This has really clouded my experieince of Rome which is sad as it is such a beautiful city.

When I spoke to some locals they laughed and said not to bother, but I was wondering if any one else has done this, and if there were anything happened? Also do you think I should try and explain to the company?

There is a chance that they issue an order of payment to someone living abroad (and outside EU), but it is such long and complicated a procedure that they will unlikely go through it for 100 € only.

If they do, they will ask you for a higher amount, but no more than 200 € I think. Only if you don't pay under this notification, they may ask US authorities to earn the payment on their behalf.

You may take the risk, and only pay if you receive a second notification.

Don't worry about it. If you're not an Italian citizen, you'll be fine. They aren't going to issue an Interpol warrant for your arrest for not paying your 100 euro ticket

I know you've said you didn't understand the system, but I know that the transport police everywhere are pretty strict and don't take ignorance of the system as an excuse. All I can say is take it to be a learning experience.

Did they ask for your identification when they gave you the fine? If not, I don't think there is a way they could connect it to you. I don't understand the context of "explain to the company" is, were you there on business and gave them your company address?

If the police can find you, you'd better pay the fine.
