Sorrento or Naples? Where shall I stay?

I booked a flight to Italy, now I can't decide which town I will stay. Sorrento or Naples? I am going there to see the Pompeii/ Ercolano remains. Is Sorrento too touristic perhaps? Can one make beautiful walks in the evening?

Personally, I prefer Sorrento - it's easy access to Pompeii and Ercolano on the train. I like the ambiance of the smaller town and it's an easy day trip into Naples. I usually spend at least one night on Capri or in Ravello when I go. Yes, there are nice walks there in the evenings. I live in northern Italy and get to that area a couple of times a year.

It is a difficult choice. I live in Naples but work in Sorrento, so I know both very well. So, lets write a few considerations.
1)They are both near Pompei and Ercolano, so this is not a problem.
2)Naples, obviously, is the bigger one, there are lots of places to visit, churchs, museums, lots of shops. It is funny to walk through the little streets of the storic center, and it is also cheaper than Sorrento.
Oh! I was forgetting! The food is really better in Naples!
3) Sorrento is the favourite destination of English speaking tourists sice tens of years, so lots of people there speak at least a little English (in Naples depends), and for the same fact there are many pubs just like in England, and food is often similar to the one you eat in your country (that is not bad of course). There are lots of shops and characteristic streets to walk through, also. If during your permanence in Sorrento the weather is sunny you can have a sunbath ( even in Naples, but the entrance at the beach is expensive).
The last thing: of course, for your quietness, it is better not to walk through Italian cities with gold jewels, Rolex watches and expensive gadgets...you'd be teh temptation of the thieves!

Stay in Naples, trains to sorrento are frequent, a day up mount Vesuvius is fantastic! Ercolano is quiet as most go Pompeii, boats from Naples to the islands are more frequent too. Also the airport is nearby, bit of a waste of time going to sorrento with baggage on the first day and coming back on the last. Just do a day trip to Sorrento.

Hi, I live in Naples and I suggest you to stay here. Naples is in the right position to see everything. You can easily go to Pompei, Sorrento or Caserta by train. Furthermore, Hotels are cheaper in Naples. Obviously you have to pay attention to the position, look out for the historical center so that in the evening you can easily go out. In Sorrento there's nothing to do in the evening

stay in naples because naples is a big city... in there were many disco pub locals etc....

Naples is more accessible to Pompeii, however, I've promised myself that next time I am staying in Sorrento at the Hotel Bellevue Syrene.

I discovered this hotel during a beautiful walk in the afternoon - It'd be incredible in the evening.

Go to Naples to my opinion. You can go to Scoobit.com, the hotel search engine at http://www.scoobit.com Switch the language to English, then fill the form with city name (Naples) and leave the address field blank. Then click on "Search hotel". I went to Schilizzi Hotel, nice and clean place, loving it, but feel free to choose the hotel that best fits your needs. Scoobit.com is a safe website I've used many times so far, and you can book on line. Sorrento is too touristic for me, too. My favorite archaeological sites are Pompeii and Herculaneum, it's gorgeous (sad but gorgeous). You'll see.
