It's because Venice is built on a number of islands. There were already small fishing communities on the islands, but people from the mainland populated the islands to avoid the invading armies of Attila the Hun, the Lombards and later the Franks. The system of canals and bridges grew to take advantage of the natural geography.

There are a lot of boats. Public transportation is by boat. the vaporettos operate like public buses and there are water taxis. The gondolas are more like hansom cabs in places like Central Park in New York - they provide scenic tours more than point-to-point transportation. In some places there are boats that operate as ferries to cross the Grand Canal.

It's also easy to walk around Venice - it's not a large city. There are a lot of interesting things to see that you would miss from the boats.

I m italian and i lived in venice.I and it t s very pretty. You can go with boats around the city or walk in the little roads and bridges that will take you everywere, exept on some islands.I lived there for 4 years and always got lost.It s like a labirint. It s a beautifull place for visiters but if you live there it s quite a hassel. If it rains the level of water is too high but u still have to go to work so u walk with your biggest boots and get all wet,in the summer it stinks couse of the sewers and there are always tourists around. The water is actually the old ( and still functioning ) sewer sistem so when you see on tv that the tourists are refreshing their feet in **** thinking it s water is not so cool.Just kn ow that te poles on wich the houses stand resisted couse of the pupu solidifidaing and not couse of the cement.
( sorry if my english is not so good)

Venice leads you in a totally different world.

No cars, first of all. It gives you another dimension of time. Everything go slower. You have time to look at people in the face, talk to them (them, well, even thought Venetian tend to be quite rude with non-venetian).

And every corner is surrounded by extremely beautiful things. Your eyes are constantly engaged by the sight of Beauty.

At dusk when the tourist leave the city and people finish to work, all meet for a chat and a glass of spritz (a kind of aperitif).

It's sooooooooooo relaxing living in Venice.

Ant it's like a labyrinth. You gent get lost and then find back you way even if you grow up there. It's really magical! (but, yes, if you have no sense of direction whatsoever could be quite challenging)
