I am in the same boat as you except i i am not italian lol. I want to study there, next year...so hopefully everything is sorted out then.

I have heard it is a good place to visit to know about a really good culture. French are french, German [language not attractive] and well you are already from the UK [ like me] so you know about UK life so
I think italia is the best option and i would NOT let the protests stop me from studying there.

As long as you go to study in italia in a student exchange program [Erasmus] it will be better and you would not be affected from the cuts, because you pay your UK Uni not the host uni in italia and all you need to pay is living costs. That is what i am doing for next october!

hi, i am an italian student. it depends on what you 'd like to study. of course rome, bologna, milano are the biggest but for example venice is the best one for economy, padova for law and medicine with rome...

It really depends on what you're studying. Technically, the Alma Mater Studiorum in Bologna is ranked first among italian universities but its reputation has been going downhill in the last few years. The same goes for La Sapienza in Rome.

If you study architecture / engineering I would suggest the Politecnico in Milan. For languages, go for Ca' Foscari in Venice. Med school is good in both Padua and Verona, the latter also has a great law school.
For economics and business, Bocconi in Milan is the best.

What you need to know is that in most universities, students aren't assessed through several assignment throughout the semester, but undergo a verbal exam that is worth 100% of the final grade.

I also have to warn you about auxiliary personnel (secretaries, etc) who are apparently allergic to any kind of work and make your life a living hell. Unfortunately, the part of the italian population that works for the public administration seems unfamiliar with the concepts of discipline and professionalism.

Despite our very limited funding, the quality of italian research is very good.

it depends on what you want to study!if you want to study humanities just stay where you are!they are really poorly taught!if you want to study scientific subject Italy is (or was) pretty good..but now they are cutting funds everywhere!so you'd be better to stay where you are.
Ciao!

True, there are protests every now and then but that doesn't mean you shouldn't study in Italy. It does not affect the university education or student life. The absolute best university is Bocconi, where you can study economics or law and you'll definitely have a nice career coming from there. You'll find a really international environment, in terms of students and teachers while at other universities most students are Italian.

There are tons of protests in Rome and all over the country for the budget cuts for education. The public universities are under strain right not and its probably not a good idea to attend one of them because of all the new political things going on. But I'm from America and I am used to the fact that I must pay a good amount of money to go to a private college to get a good education because public educations aren't as good. So I would check private schools out.

As for student life, they don't usually have resident dorms (which is completely different for me, I dont know about the UK student life). But that's as much as I know.

avoid! have you head about latest months (and today) millions of students protesting in Italy aganist the minister Gelmini? She wants to cut all money from public university..she is completely crazy...I would recomment NOT to go to study in Italy right now.
