Please go see Taormina in Sicily for the bottom of Italy portion of your trip. There is beautiful coastline and gorgeous architecture...many people miss it because they think Sicily is geographically out of the way.
On the way to Sicily,I would suggest the larger towns if you have not seen them before i.e Venice Florence and Rome. If you have already seen them then I would skip them all together and suggest some other cities/towns:
Turin - the location of the palace of Italy's royal family before Italy became a republic. It is beautiful. There are also yummy Italian chocolate cafes.
Cinque Terre - 5 seaside towns not far from the Italian riviera - perfect!
Assisi - town of St Francis of Assisi. If you are not religious it is still worth visiting as it is such a beautiful town located on a hill in the countryside.
Amalfi Coast - near Naples I have not been here but it always receives rave reviews
The sicilian island of Lipari on the way to Sicily by Ferry from Naples.
You can also access some of the other local islands.
Hope that gives you a bit of inspiration.
Have fun (buon divertimento) |

Without a doubt: The Cinque Terre's.Old world charm among locals!! Vernazza. Hike to each city (there's 5 small cities in all). Sit along the cliff's in an outdoor cafe sipping espresso. Watch the local kids at play in the park. Absolutely the best trip I've ever taken!! Eat local pastries. Cheap,Excellent tasting wine. Eat at Castello's in Vernazza. Enjoy this one of a kind cultural experience! We did it with two kids and the Italians love children!! Kindness abounds! |

My wife and I just got back and although all places we went are incredible, there were two spots that we both agreed anyone going there could not miss. The first is Cinque Terra. This is 5 cities along the west coast in Northern Italy. There is a trail you can hike along the coast, or you can take a train. It is the most beautiful coastline you will see.
The second place is the Almalfi Coast which is near Napoli. This is also a very beautiful coastline, and is very close to Napoli and the Isle of Capri, so it is very easy to see Pompeii, Isle of Capri, and Herculenium (spelling?). All of which are definitly must see's when you are in Italy.
Enjoy your trip!!
Ciao!! |

I lived in Florence for 4 months and if you haven't been, you shouldn't miss it.
Sienna is beautiful and historic-it has a church where Saint Catherine was believed to have been pushed by the devil (the step where it happened is marked with an 'X') and the church also houses Saint John the Baptist's arm (it's plated in gold, so you can't really see the bones, but it's there).
Capri is breathtakingly beautiful. You have to take a ferry to get to it, but it's quiet and stunning for its natural beauty. While there, you should go to the Blue Grotto (it's a tourist destination, but worth it-you pay ~5 Euros to ride in a small canoe into the grotto and the sunlight reflects off the rocks at the bottom of the grotto and shines blue through the water and lights up the grotto. Officially, there's no swimming in the grotto, but you can swim if you bribe your guide (sometimes they let you for free, but it can take up to 5 euros).
I also loved Venice, especially the small islands in the lagoon (I made it to Murano, and Burano). It's a nice change of pace because they don't have cars, but that could be tricky for you.
Try to visit some of the smaller towns along the way-they offer a distinctly different experience of Italy than the cities. Some towns I made it to that were nice were Orvietto, Lucca, Arezzo, San Gimignano, Greve, and Cinque Terre. My favorites were probably Cinque Terre, Greve, and Arezzo.
Enjoy your trip! |

You might also try Bellagio on Lake Como in Northern Italy. Many travel writers call Bellagio the most beautiful town in all of Europe. |

im not going to give you any cliche answeres. You have to go to Cinque Terre. I am not kidding you, it is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see. It contains 5 cities on the Coast of italy, all 5 minutes away from each other by train. And you can get a day pass by train for about 10 euros. im not kidding you, it is fantastic. go on google images and type "Cinque Terre". You will see what i mean. |
