Susa is in the Italian Alps and local scenery is fantastic. If you like mountains, you don't need to go far out of town. Turin is also fascinating if you like Architecture. Don't miss the little church outside the ducal palace (on the left as you face the palace). You're not all that far from Milan, but if you're only going for 7 - 10 days, Susa and Turin should fill your days.

Susa is a delight-full little town on the road S24 from France to Turin. The nearest airports in Italy are Turin and Milan. There is a regular train service from the porta nuova station in Turin to Susa. The area is very popular with cyclists and motor cyclists, because there are lots of mountains and windy roads. Unfortunately to see the best of this area, it is advisable to have some form of transport, ie. a hire car. There is a nice lake on the road S22 out of Susa, but you have to climb a few hair pin bends to get to it.

There are only a few hotels in the area, I have stayed a the hotel Napoleon, which is located in Susa. There are a number of small cafes and restaurants in the area.

Turin is a wonderfull city, full of character, which I much prefer to Milan. A visit to Palazzo Vittora Veneto which is next to the River Po is recommended. There are nice selection of shops, bars and restaurants near to the porta nuova railway station which is on Vittorio Emanuelle II.

If you are not able to hire a car, you can hire scooters in Turin, which are a very popular form of transport in Italy.

Ryan air doesn't seem to have flights listed for the Dublin to Turin route for any dates at this point. You may want to call them to find out when the route will be running. However, you can book flights from Dublin to Milan Orio al Serio (the airport at Bergamo) in June. There's a shuttle bus from there to Milano Centrale train station and you can take the train from there to Torino and on to Susa. Check Aer Lingus too - they have flights from Dublin into all three Milan airports. If you fly into/out of Milan, you could spend some of your trip in Milan and the old town in Bergamo is definately worth a visit. Como is also a possibility for a day trip from Milan.

In answer to your update regarding Grenoble: The border crossing is very quick and it is a reasonable option to look at.
