This is how we scheduled our trip to Rome and it was fantastic. Our first day of arrival we did a night walk of Rome, visiting the Trevi Fountain (we stayed at the Hotel Fontana directly in front of the Trevi Fountain - expensive but WELL worth it - imagine waking up in the morning to a beautiful Italian sunrise, opening the shutters, hearing the sound of the fountain, peering down from your window watching the well dressed Italian men and women strolling to work - breathtaking!!). We made the Pantheon our next stop (meaning All Gods)(the artist Raphael is buried here) but make sure you see the Piazza de Pietra before you get to the Pantheon. Next was the Victor Emmanuel Monument, the Piazza Navona (where you'll find the Four Rivers Fountain), St. Ignazio Church (check out the false dome - one of many visual illusions) and finally the Spanish Steps.
The next day we visited the San Giovanni in Laterano Church (this was the first Christian church in the city of Rome), then St. Peter's in Chains Church where you'll find St. Peter's chains and Michaelangelo's statue of Moses. Then, off to the Colosseum and the Forum, and the Capitoline Museum at the top of the Forum.
On our fourth day we visited the Baths of Diocletian, the National Museum of Rome (you'll love the statues of the Discus Thrower and Apollo), then off on the Metro to the Vatican to discover Michaelangelo's Pieta and Cuppola (dome - 520 steps to the top!!) and of course, the Sistine Chapel.
There is SOOOOOOOO much to see in Rome. These are only a few of the very best and most fun stops. I HIGHLY recommend you buy Rick Steves' Rome guide book for 2006 (or if you can find that use the 2005 one). His book made every single solitary attraction, big or small, something to appreciate and discover. He provides SO much information that is easy to understand and which makes a trip to Italy so much more worthwhile. We crammed more into six days of travel than I could have possibly imagined and we came back to the hotel each night a little tired but feeling as though we truly discovered the history of Rome. If you want more info, please contact me via yahoo messenger. |

I just got back from Rome and what an amazing city!!
here's my top 5
- Vatican museum (Sistine chapel)
- trivi fountain
- the coliseum
- café flavia (cool restaurant)
- Spanish Steps (shopping!)
Also, if you don't mind the touristy thing, the open top buses are a good way to get around the city. Using this you get a ride to your desired sites while being able to see the whole city. |

Ditto the Gelato, especially in Piazza Navona! Oh, and get three scoops at once--you, know, to maximize your intake. (Get some hazelnut and chocolate! Yum!).
My reccs are the same as others: Vatican, Trevi Fountain, Colliseum, the Steps, and there are some ruins across from the Colliseum that are pretty interesting. |
