The Piazza San Marco and Ponte Dei Sospiri..?

According to a website I read, the Ponte Dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs) in Venice, Italy is 0.06 of a mile away from Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square).

Is this a walking distance? If so, how long would it take to walk it? And would it be possible for someone to get to the Ponte Dei Sospiri from Piazza San Marco by gondola?

Thanks!

You walk! It's just around the corner from Piazza San Marco and will take just a couple of minutes. You get a good view of it from the bridge between the Doge's Palace and the next building which used to be the old prison. Might be a good idea to get a map!

However, to actually cross the Bridge of Sighs you will need to visit the Doge's Palace.

Everything in Venice is within walking distance. But, if you're getting a bit tired do not use a gondola as public transport, they are much too expensive. Public transport is by vaporettos which travel all the main canals and to the islands. They are the buses of Venice. Take a gondola ride just to say you've done it, but it will cost you about 80euros.

Ponte dei Sospiri is just around the corner from Piazza San Marco, just turn left, after the Palazzo Ducale and in about 2-3 mintues walking you reach the bridge from which you can see the Ponte dei Sospiri (always on the left side, over the canal). To walk through the Ponte dei Sospiri you will have to enter to the Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace).

If you take a gondola ride from San Marco there will be routes which pass under the Ponte dei Sospiri, just let the gondoliere know that you would like to go there. There are vaporettos which pass in front of San Marco square but they pass too far away to get a glance of the Ponte dei Sospiri.

You can walk... Walking is the best thing, especially in Venice.

Here ishttp://www.lonelyplanet.com/maps/europe/italy/venice/ a map of the size of Venice

Pick up a guidebook on Venice for better maps... Lonely plant, DK Eyewitness, Frommer's and Rick Steves all have guidebooks on Venice. Read through them all to see which one you like best.

Walking is great exercise ... or use the vaporetto

Here is link for schedules and cost
