The last two weeks of September and first two of October. The temperature will be 75 everyday, and it will be sunny. Best of all, the tourists will have mostly gone home. Only the smart ones go during 'shoulder' season. Be smart.

I went to Rome and Venice in early March 2004. It was sort-of cold, but not too bad if you dress appropriately. Unfortunately, I had gone with only a backpack of not-so-warm clothes (I was traveling from Germany and didn't want to carry much with me).

Spring is a good time for travel because it's not horribly busy, and March is great if you're Catholic because there's a lot going on in Rome.

Spring or fall. Its not to crowded and the weather is just right.

Go a month or 2 before or after summer (july-august). Italians are on holiday in August...

Its not so stifling hot then. The 2 times I went to Venice, it was on the shoulder seasons and the crowds aren't as bad. Also I didn't experience the summer Venice stink!!
