Is it possible to book online tickets for the Vatican Museums? I will be in Rome on the 2nd of June and I know the queues there are very long.
I found some sites online but they say you have to be part of a guided tour to reserve your ticket. Can't I just go on my own?
This site should tell you what you need to know: http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/z-Info/MV_Info_Orario.html#bigliettibis

Hello,
It is not possible to buy tickets ahead of time without doing a tour. If you are worried about the lines, go in the afternoon instead of the morning. The lines tend to die down after lunch so you should have no problems. Start with the basilica in the morning and then do the museums in the afternoon. As for getting into the sistine chapel, the vatican museums end at the sistine chapel. You go through the chapel to get out of the museums. From there you may go back into the museums or into the basilica if you'd like.
Also, if you don't want to do a tour and go in the afternoon, you can rent an audio guide. These guides are really good and will give you lots of information as you go through the museums.

the queue for the sisteen chapel is always enormous, and check to see if it's open before you go. sometimes it's closed as the pope is doing something in there.

One lesson learned the hard way: the Vatican does not accept credit cards/debit cards....cash only!!

I'm sorry I can't answer your question...but My son and gf did one of the Guided tours and they said it was worth every Penny ...I plan to do it next I'm there..so maybe think again about the guided tour...they said the person that did it was excellent and filled them on details that they would never have been aware of...

we did a guided tour which gets you in front of the general admission queue to a side entrance for tour groups.
seriously the general admission queue for the vatican was the longest queue i've ever seen in my entire life.
i recommend doing a guided tour, you will get your moneys worth.
