3 days for both rome and milano??
If It's so, maybe you won't have enough time to see out of your window :)
If you mean 3 days in Rome OR Milan, it can be enough to see most interesting places.
In Rome you could spend the days this way
1. you can have a nice walk starting from piazza della repubblica (republic's square)
http://www.italyguides.it/img/med/repubblica3.jpg
going down on via nazionale
http://www.tesoridiroma.net/galleria/barberini_colosseo/foto/vnazionale01.jpg
reach piazza venezia with the emanuele II monument (altare della patria)
http://toon.heindl-internet.de/rom/a800/64030257-piazza-venezia-altare-patria.jpg
walking straight on via dei fori imperiali and visit the roman forum
http://www.romantigua.com/foro%20romano.jpg
and reach the colosseum this way.

It may seem a few things but it takes some time to visit all, and you'll lose a lot of time stopping in many corners, little churchs, streets... there are a lot of interesting things on the way. From the colosseum you can also reach the circo massimo on foot
http://www.activitaly.it/monument/imago/12.jpg
2. you need another day to visit the whole area of st peter's basilica and its vatican museums
http://www.eurogarden.net/img/l_pietro.jpg
and the near castel sant'angelo on the river tiber (Tevere)
http://www.rositour.it/RomaLazio/Tevere/04_S.Angelo%20e%20Ponte.jpg
just near there, there's one of the old part of the city called trastevere, who deserves a visit (it's good to go there also to have diner and spend the night)
http://www.rome-roma.net/rome_roma/trastevere/trastevere.jpg
3. another area with a lot of things to see is from piazza di spagna (spanish steps)
http://www.resurrectionist.net/images/piazzadiSpagna.jpg
walking on via del corso (with a lot of shops)
http://www.tesoridiroma.net/galleria/vcorso/foto/dalvittoriano30.jpg
to piazza navona (with the bernini's fountain and a lot of street artists)
http://astrolazio.altervista.org/images/030426_piazza%20navona%20di%20notte_obelisco_quadri.jpg
and the pantheon
http://www.danheller.com/images/Europe/Italy/Rome/Landmarks/pantheon-interior-big.jpg
and then to piazza del popolo
http://www.abcroma.com/P_popolo_N1.jpg
and pincio (panoramic terrace in the biggest green park of the city, Villa Borghese)
http://pastrin.bytez.org/images/roma_pincio_g.jpg
if you have more time (but you gotta be fast! :P) also the basilica di san giovanni
http://www.villadilivia.it/Foto560/basilica-san-giovanni.jpg
and santa maria maggiore deserve a visit.
http://www.racine.ra.it/lcalighieri/Giubileo/images/s-maria-maggiore.jpg
anyway, 5 things are:
piazza venezia
colosseum
saint peter
piazza di spagna
piazza navona/pantheon
for milan, I can't be so specific because even if I've been there a couple of times, it's not my city, but the most important things to see are surely
the Dom
http://www.gruppoartema.it/cattedrale.jpg
and the Castello Sforzesco
http://discountmilano.serverbox.net/tour/Rinascimento/Castello/CastelloVedutaAerea500x390.jpg
then there's the Last Dinner by leonardo Da Vinci but you need to reserve!! you must call +39.02.8942.1146 ( the website is http://www.cenacolovinciano.org/english/index.html )
...have a nice stay in Italy! ;-) |

Milano: Duomo, then walk along via Torino and look for S. Maria Presso S.Satiro, for the perspective. Go on and in largo Carrobbio turn left and see San Lorenzo columns. Then either shop in Corso di Porta Ticinese or pass through the Parco delle Basiliche to have a look at S. Eustorgio. Cross Piazza XXIV Maggio and go to the Naviglio Grande for an aperitivo or an ice cream. If you want to eat, good restaurant Ponte Rosso has Milanese-inspired cuisine. Next day: go to Castello Sforzesco and walk from there to the Pinacoteca di Brera. |

3 days is short so the best bet is convenience, both places, stay close to the main train terminal. Rome, you should go to Colosium, Ventican (also 1 whole day), Petheon, Forum, Milan, you should go to the big Catherdral, make sure you go to the roof where there is a "forest" of colums of beautiful carvings, then go to the old biggest mall next to that catherdral to look at the architure of the ceiling of the mall. |
