Transportation between Italy and Malta?

I'm planning on going to Malta from Italy. I know there are Ferries between Sicily and Malta. But how do I get to Sicily from Italy? Could I take the rail down to the southern tip then ferry on over to Sicily/Malta?

Are there any ports in Italy that go straight to Malta?

If anyone could give a step by step (including cities) of my options, please help!

What's the best way to get from Italy to the Island of Malta? From a jumping-off point in your Italian vacation, of course! Immerse yourself in Mediterranean sights and tastes as you travel by train to Italy's southern tip. Then ferry over to Sicily and Malta for a land-and-sea journey you'll never forget.http://www.beauty-and-romance-of-sicily.com/
