Make sure you cover your shoulders when going in churches. You can bring a shawl and wrap it around. If you need a place to stay you should look at www.venere.com which has a lot of Italian hotels that are not usually listed on orbitz or expedia. One of the hotels I stayed at was called Hotel Pineta Palace, in the outskirts of Rome. It was a great deal, really nice, we had a balcony view of St. Peter's dome. The breakfast was amazing as well. It is 10 minutes from Vatican so if you don't mind taking shuttles/buses then I'd recommend it. Plus, it is in a non-tourist part of town so you definitely feel what the real Rome is like without so much tourism.

You don't need to cover your arms, but shorts are not permitted in some churches so make sure you have slacks or a skirt.
Forgive me if this sounds terrible, but there are lots of gypsy kids that will try to rob you in Rome..I have been there many times, and they try it on.. they will approach you to buy a newspaper or just start touching you, distracting you..just stamp your foot in their direction and yell Basta.. which means enough.. they will more than likely cease and desist.
Don't carry all of your money and your passports with you all the time.. Don't get freaked out, I have never been robbed or harmed, I actually liked europe so much I moved here so don't let this info freak you out.. Rome is a fantastic city.. so many fantastic things to see.

Hey, I got back from Roma two days ago, spent a week there, loved it! Cover up your shoulders and knees going in to Vatican and to be honest any other churches really. I forgot to carry a long sleeve top around with me one day and got kicked out of a church (just a normal church not one of the big ones)! Take lots of money, be prepared for beggars and people trying to flog you rubbish around the touristy spots, watch your backpack around the tourist spots. Don't buy sarnies from the vans by the touristy spots. Stale and overpriced! Walk ten mins up road and find some real pizza shop! Ask the price of everything before you buy coz if they see a tourist they will double the price in some places! Buy yourself a 24hr metro pass for 4 euro to get around. Buy your ticket for the colloseum at the palatine and you cut the hour long queue! Take a camera with a big memory card & charge it up everynight! I took like 600 pictures! lol. Get prepared for the heat and get some really comfy trainers! Cheap if poss! i bought a pair of Â£50 nikes which are gonna have to go in bin coz i've walked so much they are worn out! lol. Have fun! Its great! xx

Yes . When going to the Cathedrals , you have to dress proper . You can't have baggy pants or jeans . You must cover your arms and legs . You can't wear a hat of a t-shirt with writting .The Cathdrals are well worth the hassle .

In October here is enough cold so I think that you have to cover arms and legs; however in Churches people have to be cover until knees and not wear top.

When you go into a store or restaurant, etc. make sure to greet people there with a "buongiorno". It's mostly to be polite but it makes a huge difference. Always try to speak Italian. As long as you make the effort, Italians will be happy. This pretty much goes for the whole country.

I also learned the hard way that sometimes doors to public buildings didn't always open the same way. Some you pull open and some you push.

everyone there speaks english even thought hey pretend not to. they dont have big breakfast either. in october you need a ligth jacket. everyone there dresses pretty casual. becareful of the gypsies and your wallet or purse.

You have to have your shoulders and knees covered to get into any church and the vatican musuem. Besides that there are none. Wear confortable walking shoes since there is lots of walking and some of the roads and sidewalks are made of big rocks from the Rome period. I really wouldnt wear shorts either just because it draws more attention to you and makes you stand out as an american and you want to blend more. , Some say dont wear gym shoes because Italtian dont wear them but I wear them all the time and more europeans are wearing them then ever before. If you use the subway which is really easy and cheap just watch your stuff because the pickpocketer are really really bad. Dont give money to any gyspies because then they may try an dfollow you and target you. Just watch your stuff.

not your arms, but your shoulders, also, not in shorts in Cathedrals and churches. Other than that, there's no dress code. Travel tips, becareful of pickpockets, wear good walking shoes, if you want to line up for Vitcan, just after one in the afternoon is the best, public transportation, both bus and subways are good. Enjoy your trip!
