We stayed at an agritouismo called Casa Rondini. It's in Umbria, about a 2-hour drive north of Rome. It's not a B&B, but small apartments, with kitchens, so it's easy to take care of yourself. Eat breakfast in your PJs, if you want.

It's part of a farm, and you can buy the farm's products while you're there, including wine (which is quite good, and inexpensive too), tomato sauce, jams, eggs, olive oil, etc. The owner, Marco, will also cook for the guests one or two evenings a week, sometimes as a cooking class. That's a lot of fun, because you get to know the other people staying there. (There are markets and restaurants close as well, of course.)

We were there for a week, and did day trips out from there: Orvieto (my favorite town we visited, though smaller), Asissi, Perugia, and Lago Trasimeno. Also a lovely setting for just relaxing.

I highly recommend it!

Hello! If you're planning to fly and drive I would recommend Tuscany! That's where I am from and it's a beautiful region. There are a lot of wineries and wine trails (called the Wine Trails of Tuscany/Strade del Vino) all around the region. B&B are everywhere in the countryside, so you will have a great choice! (www.agriturismo.it for example, just type in bed and breakfast or agriturismo). Umbria is also a beautiful region located at the south border of Tuscany and closer to Rome. If you decide some kind of itinerary including which regions you are planning to visit I could help you better. You don't mention where you live, but there is a direct flight with Delta from New York to Pisa (town of the leaning tower). Let me know !

If you like to have a glimps at Genoa and an apartment facility, have a look at the link below. Genoa is a town, which is not yet discovered by the majority of tourists, but is an old "newborn" city and with it's extensive historical center one of the largest middle age towns in Europe.

Of course you should try to visit Florence and Rome, but depending on the season you will notice how much more in touch you will be with "real people" in Genoa. Cities like Florence tend to be overrun with tourists, while there is so much more to explore in many other cities, Genoa being one of them.
