The entire country is wine tasting. And to me, the entire country is "must see" Just walk and you will discover and stumble upon much!

Be prepared-August is hot and full of tourists, whereas many Italians take their vacations then.

There are many many must sees and dos. They are basically all the places you would expect them to be. Rome, St. Peter's (but skip the vatican museum if you are pressed for time), Patheon, Colissum, Trivy fountain.
Venice, make sure you go to a glass shop.
Milan, the galleria, there's a statue of a horse by leonardo, la scalla.
Florance, There is an overlook of the city,I think it is named for michalango, great view. Maria del flora (church), staute david.
Make sure to stop for gelato too!

However, I want to remind you that many of the sites in Italy are religious, like Vatican city in Rome and Maria del Flora in Florence. They will not let you wear some clothes into these places. Make sure you make skirts that are knee lenght and shirts with sleeves or a shawl to cover your shoulders. They won't let you in overwise.

I suggest to only stay in Venice for 1 day and add extra time in florence and rome. Also, you could probably stay in genoa turin and milan for 2 days. I suggest this because Rome especially is a worldly city, with so much to offer that you should enjoy it for as long as you can. Same with florence, to a lesser extent.

The "must-do's" in the major cities include the major attractions covered in the on-line tour guides & travel books. Some of the less obvious things to do include:

I would recommend using one of the 3 days in Genova for a side trip to Cinque Terre - it's about an hour and a half on the train to Monterosso with a couple of trains every hour. The 5 small towns are all interesting and the scenery is among the best in Italy. You can buy a day ticket that is good for the trains between the towns and the trails. Cinque Terre info: (http://www.cinqueterre.it/en/index.asp) . The house of Columbus and the aquarium were interesting.

Spend one of the days in Milan at Lake Como in the Alps. It's about a half hour by train to the Como San Giovanni station. The ice bar in Milan is unusual.

Be sure see the Orsanmichele, San Miniato al Monte, and the view from Piazza Michelangelo in Firenze (Florence) . Reservations for the museums (eg, Accademia, Uffizzi, Bargello, ) can be made by calling: 055 294883. You can get in without a reservation, but the waiting times in line are often an hour or more.

I also recommend that you spend less time in Genoa, Turin, Milan and Venice....I have not been to the first 3, I admit but I know Milan does not take much time to get around. Venice is quite small and also quick to get around. I had 2 nights there and felt I had done as much as I wanted (the main place to go is St Marcos Square with the church and the Doges Palace being places to go)...there are some markets near the Riato Bridge which are quite good for souveniers.
I actually liked Verona which is about an hour away from train from Venice and could be a place to visit at least for a day if you have to stay in Venice (in that you have already booked accommodation)....

Florence and Rome have lots to offter....if you can spend more time in each you can do lots....I did day trips from both:
I went to Pompeii from Rome which is really worth it....I enjoyed seeing this amazing place. If you can add Sorrento and Capri (which some day trips offer as well or would like to spend a whole day again...I recommend that)
In Florence its only about an hour to Pisa (to see the leaning tower)..but there is not much more than that...I continued on to a town called Lucca which is a mini-florence, with less people and is lovely...the train back to Florence is again about an hour.
You can also go to Siena...which is a lovely town and worth a visit...the area has lots of wineries so this maybe a place to be able to do that.
Florence has lovely buildings (but as I commented earlier has lots of people/tourists), like theDuomo (wow), there is a hop on hop off bus there that can take you around the place, especially to the hill on the otherside of the River Arno to see views of the city...the "classic" view of Florence and well worth a look.
Rome has heaps to offer too with the Roman influence strong (eg Collosum, Roman Forum, Pantheon) as well as a renaissance feel like the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona (just round the corner from the Pantheon)...and of course the Vatican....the museums are good (there is one inside St Peters itself and one round the corner with the Sistine Chapel).
Have a great time....I suggest doing some research on these places to get the most out of them (as I missed the significance of some places and missed out on seeing other things too!)

haha okay i go there everyyy summer--cuz im italian and my family lives there........let me just tell you right now....YOU ARENT GOING TO WANT TO COME BACK! its soooo gorgeous. i recommend if you wanna be a tourist to go to rome...but if you wanna actually see real italians and not just other tourists....go to the south. like naples. or as its called "napoli"! haha milan and venice are so gorgeousss. i cant stress enough how much fun your going to have! dont forget to ride a vespah or moped when you can! those are so part of the culture and you need to take like 38578346 rolls of film! =]
