Traveling to Italy alone? |
I want to go to Italy in the spring. I plan on traveling by train going to, Rome, Florence, Lucca and Venice. Is it safe for a woman to travel alone? I have been doing my research but would like to hear from other people that have gone there. Thanks. |

I am a woman and i always travel alone in Italy...why shouldn't we? Italy is not burundi and tons of women are taking trains, driving cars and use metro alone...in a few days i have to go Rome for work and i will go alone..i will use the car the train the metro....alone in the hotel...alone on the streets...i do that constantly for my job and i am still alive...so i really dont understand why you should not do it...or you think Italy is more dangerous that any other place in Europe..is not...plus...is safer...obviously common sense will help..i am 36 aged and i would not ever walk or use trains or metro alone in the dark during the night in lonely places far from the centre but i would not do in anywhere in London or Paris or New york!...get it?
P.s. I used to walk in the Uk in the afternoon and I found it much much MORE scary and unsafe with all those dodgy chavs that in during night time in any part of Italy...so nothing to worry about really |

of course is not true when they tell you be carefull with italian men.
I am italian man and like everypart of the world people you can meet good and bad.
To travel alone, like someone said better be carefull in the nights but you have to know that italians are always ready to help someone who is coming from foreigner countries. Always !
We are very known as always open to help people. So I am SURE you will find beautiful places, you will love people there (here) and you will have fun and you will go home wishing to come here again soon.
Take with you camera and your best smile.
And don't forget our universal word to salut people: CIAO.
ciao !

I have been to Italy alone but I am a Man. Still there were plenty of women walking around alone. But if you are scared than just blend in with a large group. However do not go out alone at night. That could be dangerous. |

Just be careful at train stations, bus terminals and open public places, I lived in Italy for a few years and was pick pocketed twice, once by a woman, don't carry much cash on hand, other than theft, you shouldn't have any problems, keep a copy of your i.d with you not the actual passport etc, Italy is generally a safe place, have fun |

I agree with King111.
Why are you going alone? You should always have atleast one person to travel with. Not saying anything will happen, but its always good to be sure. |

In October this year I travelled from Lake Garda, to Venice, to Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Catania, back to Rome ALL BY MYSELF!! And I am 24 single female! From UK. Met loads of people had loads of fun just stay away from unlit areas especially late at night particularly in Naples. XX |

Many females travel alone in Italy every year without problems. In the nine years I've lived here my daughter and various friends have visited and done some travel on their own on days when I was working with no problems at all. As with most places you go, you need to be aware of your surroundings and watch for pickpockets.
The trains are a good way to get around Italy and very easy to use. If you use the night trains, you can get a single compartment, or a berth in a female only compartment. |

Be careful around the men. Italian men are much more aggressive than, say, American men. If you make eye contact they think you are interested and will probably follow you.... |
