I think you should buy something that reminds you of the moments you'll spend in Italy.
If you've some money, buy some jewelry in Venice. Or better, one of the typical carnival mask, they're really beautiful (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/50/Mascaras_carnaval.jpg)
If you've the chance to go to Murano (taking a boat from Venice you're there, it's very near. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murano)) I suggest you to buy something made of glass.
In Padova I don't know what can you buy

Water taxi's in Venice are rather expensive so here's a tip. There are a lot of boats in the lagoon outside of St. Marks Square. Some of these boats are on a mission to pick up tourists to take them to Murano for free with the hopes that they are going to purchase some Venetian blown glass while they are there. What you get out of it is a trip to Murano, you get to watch them blow glass, plus there is a lot of boutique shopping. The glass is exquisite and will make a good memory or gift.
The Prato Della Valle in Padova is the largest square in Italy. On Saturday's they have an open market where you can buy leather goods, baskets and other handcrafts from local artisans.
