Traveling to Rome in October?

My friend and I are going to Rome at the end of October. I have a few questions about the city.

What is the best area of rome to stay in? We plan on seeing all the major sites, and we are not sure which hotels are most centrally located and in the safest neighborhood?

Also, what will the weather be like? Rainy or Sunny? Temperature?

There are hundreds of hotels to choose from, do you have any suggestions on hotels to stay in?

Thanks to all that answer

I've been to Rome 4 times and 3 of them were in October/November. One year it was very cold and sunny, the other 2 years it was mild and warm. Bring a hoodie/jacket you can layer and maybe a short sleeved t-shirt or two. That should cover just about anything temperature-wise. It was dry most of the time but I always bring a small, compact umbrella just in case.

Rome is an easy city to get around. The historic area is quite compact and easily walked. Unless you plan on being out in the wee hours of the night- any area you stay will be perfectly safe. Take the same precautions you would in any cosmopolitan city.

I like www.venere.com to look for hotels in Italy. I have used them 4 times and have never had any problems. I opt for something small and inexpensive as I end up spending most of my time out exploring and use my room only to shower and sleep. As the other poster mentioned hostels are an affordable option.

Have fun in my favorite city.

Go to www.hostels.com and stay in a hostel. They have tons of them in Rome and it will prob be about 30-50 euro a night. Lots to see in Rome, best idea is just to walk around. They have a metro system which can take you to opposite sides of the city, such as the vatican, and other places. Weather wise - its fall so it will be chilly. It is usually a little bit colder than the USA. Have fun.

I've been there many times. I always stay in Flamino near the old Olympic village because it is a bit out of the centre but still a short tram ride to everything. If you are staying for more than 4 days, consider renting an apartment instead of a hotel room. They cost about the same amount, are usually bigger, and you can cook if you feel like it. The last company I used was called Rome city Apartments and they have lots of apartments you can choose from. Google them if interested.

And ... Rome is fantastic!! Good choice. (Paris is even better though)
