With only 5 days for the trip, you will want to spend as much time seeing things as possible and as little as possible driving time. Thisis best accomplished by taking a direct route. From Venice, go to Florence using the autostradas and stop there for at least day - there's a lot to see and do. Try the Ribollita in one of the restaurants - you'll appreciate it with the cold weather. Be careful on the roads. In northern Italy, it can be foggy in the winter. We had about a three day period ending yesterday when the fog was fairly heavy between Verona and Bologna.
A nice stop between Florence and Rome is Orvieto - it's along the autostrada and not out of the way at all.
You will obviously want to spend some time in Rome before going on to Pompeii (which is absolutely worth seeing). If you have time (you probably won't), go on to Sorrento do some sightseeing there and take the ferry to Capri.
Have a great time! |

This is a very hard trip.
Here is a sample itinerary that you could do: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art53494.asp
Just add on your trip to Pompeii. |

You're very brave... That's a pretty long journey. Knowing our street, i would advise you to get a GPS system. They are quite affordable now, and they work worldwide. Very handy, especially for tourists.... But who knows, maybe get lost might be the funniest part of the trip.... from Italy... Leo |

Well you can visit :Venice (Venezia), Bologna (sorry I don't know if this name is translatable), Florence (Firenze) and Siena before to reach Roma.
Good choice Pompei, it's a colorful place.
Have a nice trip in my country. |

From Venice to Rome, you could drive due West to Lago DI Como, then South through Milan and on to Rome. You really should see Florence, but you would have to drive back East a bit. You might like to drive South along the Adriatic and cut over the mountains to Florence and on to Rome.
The Tuscany region is wonderful too.
If you have time to drive the Amalfitani Coast along the Mediterranean from Rome, a beautiful drive. You could cut off and continue to Pompei, unlesss you continue to Naples, but that would be a little out of the way.
Remember that gas stations will close over lunch time, so keep a full tank.
Have a great trip, and Buon Appitito. Plan on gaining welght. LOL |
