the italian consulate in chicago will only allow you to apply for a visa by appointment. i called (at $2.49 a minute) and they only had an appointment available 4 days after i'm already supposed to be in italy. is there any other way i can apply for a visa?
i would have applied before but my school just recently gave me the documents i needed to apply.
is there any way i can apply through the mail? or some other way? please help. thanks
I got my visa through Chicago and had to go in person. There was no other way. At the time when I applied, other Italian consulates accepted visa applications by mail, but it wasn't possible to do that because Chicago has jurisdiction over Colorado over Colorado where I lived. I ended up flying to Chicago and back one day in December and all they did at the Consulate was check that all the paperwork was complete - I was there for about 5 minutes. The turnaround after going was very fast though; I had my passport with the visa within 5 days.

Go to TravelTipsAndBits.com and click on the product tab to find assistance with your visa. You should be able to get one quick there.

If you are American or Canadian Citizen you do not need a Visa to travel to Italy for Tourism (you are allow to stay at most for 3 Months).
If you visit to Italy is for other purposes, yes you need a Visa. If you live in Chicago or nearby you should go personally to the Italian Consulate and present your case.

Are you American citizen? If yes, you do not need Italian visa to visit Italy. You would for study though. Wonder if you can apply once in Italy. How about D.C. embassy?

I would say just gt o the consulate..say you will be there for school..that's weird that your school didn't help you with this?

I'm assuming you're applying for a study visa, although I find it a bit strange that you're travelling at this time of year, just a month before school closes for the Christmas break. Wouldn't it be better to go in January, then maybe you'll have time to get the visa organised? Have you got a passport yet?
Ask your school to help, as they should have been aware that you need to allow at least one month to get a visa.
Also try emailing the Consulate in Chicago for advice: E-mail: italcons.chicago@esteri.it and here's a link to what the Consulate says about Study Visas: http://www.conschicago.esteri.it/NR/rdonlyres/04F846EA-8510-4C30-AE38-D67E4B73175C/0/Documenti_Studenti_2008.pdf
