If the hotel you're looking at is listed in popular guidebooks or has great reviews on TripAdvisor, you should book in the next few weeks. If it's some random, unknown hotel (try Googling it and seeing how many hits come up and how many sites like Expedia and Travelocity book it) you should be okay with a month's notice. Tourism starts to slow down in September but Italy can still be pretty busy at that time of year. Don't think you'll have the place to yourselves! My favorite sites for info about hotels are TripAdvisor and Virtual Tourist... from there I usually contact the hotels directly to make my reservations. |

You rather maker sure NOW to have a place booked since Tuscany in September especially in small places can be fully occupied, especially mountain towns! Can only say: book the sooner the better in order to be certain to sleep on the spot... |

September is not all that busy. I would think a month ahead is ok. Some places might be on vacation. |

Personally, I think you should have already booked your accommodation if you are wanting to have a roof over your head. Better to book an escorted tour, then you have all the problems handled by someone else. Try Insight, Global, or Trafalgar to name a few. |

Place: Castelnau Rivière Basse | Region: France | Evaluation: *****
Château du Tail is an old hunting villa belonging to the father of Napoleon III, built between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th; and set in the beautiful region of Gascony amongst the vineyards of Madiran, surrounded by lakes and forests. The property is located on the top of a little hill at 330 meters above sea level, in the village of Castelnau Riviere Basse, near the historic towns of Pau and Lourdes and the breathtaking Pyrenees; recently restructured, the style combines country house comforts with modern amenities, provides elegant and spacious living rooms and all en-suite bathrooms.
The property is divided into two parts, the Château (or Main house) and the Dependence (or Grange), 740 sqm of comfortable space, all the rooms are in fact very spacious, comfortable and furnished with taste. On the first floor of the Main house there are two large suites, ideal for a family, and one double bedroom entirely furnished with antiques, all with four-poster beds and private bathrooms. On the ground floor there are two formal drawing rooms (library and TV room) both with fireplace and a beautiful view of the surrounding garden, also a living/dining room, a larder, a well-equipped kitchen and a laundry room (all the above rooms have an independent exit to the garden); the house is also equipped with 2 TVs, satellite, telephone/fax, stereo, barbecue, microwave oven, gas oven, 2 fridges, freezer and various kitchen appliances; on request there is also children's equipment available: 2 high chairs, 3 cots, bouncing chairs, swing and garden toys.
The property is set in extensive gardens and woodland, so you can enjoy the pool, ride a bike, play croquet, darts and ping-pong or simply find a spot to relax.
