Tuscany or entire italy?

I want to travel in Italy, I have never been. I am really drawn to tuscany. Should I spend my entire time in tuscany? Would it be really stupid to not visit rome while in Italy? As I don't know much about italy, any ideas about where to go, what to do, what to expect are really appreciated. I have about 10 days in Italy, any suggestions for the itenerary are also very welcome.

With 10 days, you would have plenty of time to cover Tuscany and spend a day or two in Rome; whether you should or not is a matter of your priority and interests.

Certainly there are lots of interesting things to see and do in both places. I live about two hours north of Florence and spend a lot of time exploring Tuscany, but Rome is also a great place to visit. It's only an hour 40 minutes from Rome to Florence on the high speed trains. It would be pretty easy to do a day trip to Rome from there. I've done it several times from my home when visitors have been interested in going to Rome.

When will you be here? There are a lot of interesting local festivals that are worth visiting throughout the year. This is a good site for finding interesting events around the world: http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm?fx=home .

There are tons of guide books that cover the Tuscany in general and Florence in particular in great detail. While you're in Florence, go see the Orsanmichele. The San Miniato al Monte church is worth visiting if you go up to Piazza Michelangelo (and the views of Florence are worth the walk). There are lots of great, small hill towns to visit. Siena and Arezzo are bigger, but also definitely worth seeing. If you go to Pisa, go see the tower in the morning and then head to Lucca for the rest of the day. There's more to see and do in the old walled city there.

We spent two weeks in Italy last year with our 7 year old, and did the entire time in Tuscany. There is so much to see and do, and we wanted a slower paced vacation with less running around to get to the "next spot".

So we missed Rome and Venice. We saw very little of the "big" things everyone goes to see in Florence. But we climbed lots of towers, spent some time at the beach and we all had a fantastic time.

I'm presuming that my trip wasn't the only one that I'll take to Italy. Next time we'll plan to focus more on another area of the country.

You don't have to fly through Rome to get to Tuscany either. We came in and left from Pisa - which is a smaller airport and worked really well for us. Just about anywhere in Pisa is only about a 10 minute taxi ride to the airport, so you can make Pisa your last stop of the trip and enjoy the field of miracles a little more than the day trippers usually do.

As for where to go - Florence is a "must". We really enjoyed Lucca, and the hill towns of Volterra and San Gimignano. But getting to the hill towns is harder without a car so be prepared to rent a car, spend lots of time on public transport (train and bus) to get there or bypass the hill towns altogether.

Have a great trip!

Well Tuscany is really wonderful... But you can't definitely miss Venice and Rome... It depends on what you are expecting from your holiday, in Tuscany you'll have a great time, the landscape, the towns (don't miss Firenze, Pisa and Siena), the beaches, the people, the food. But Rome and Venice are also amazing... You don't want to miss those two cities!! If you plan to come back to Italy, then maybe stay in Tuscany and enjoy your dream... But if you're not sure about coming back, then don't miss Rome and Venice, this is my advice :) By the way, I'm Italian, so if you need more information do not hesitate to contact me!

dude
you're gooing to land in Rome, so maybe do at least 2-3 days there, then do the rest in Tuscany.

If you really want more of the flavor of an area and relax, stay in Tuscany. If you want to see all the big things in Italy, move around, it totally dpeends on your priority

I would go and see Rome....but Tuscany is enough...and you'll be close to a couple of other cites you could see on day trips since theyre with in a couple of hours drive or train....

Sienna, Pisa, Firenze[Florence].....Your going to have a blast.,.I lived there for 5 years,,,,they were the best years of my life......
