Venice is definitely the city of romance and a gondola ride and ice cream while listening t music in St. Mark's Square is not to be missed.

Florence is the place for art and sculpture. Biggest collection of Michaelangelo's work--David for instance--is at the Uffizi. Florence is a smaller town with less shopping.

Piza is near Florence so you can do that too.

why not both? i love venice tho, but there is more to see in florence. it depends on u..r u looking for love? if yes, i would say venice because thats were i met the most gorgeous looking man alive!..if u want to go more site seeing go to florence, even though u might find love in florence too. ok, just go to florence..

Both, of course! A seven day visit should be split with two days in Venice (if you fly into Venice), stay outside the city proper and take the train or bus into Venice, then take the train to Florence (three days) and last two days in Venice..

If you fly into Rome, do two days in Florence, three in Venice, with last two back in Florence.

Venice is my absolute most favorite place in the world! It's really an amazing thing to see. Just one or two days in Venice would be enough time to spend there, Florence would require more time. Can you split your time and catch a train?

Florence absolutely!
Venice is beautiful, but most people will tell you that it doesn't have terribly much to offer. It would be a great 2-day trip to see the city, but Florence can offer you so much more.
Florence has the AMAZING Duomo, one of the greatest art museums on the planet: the Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio, Pitti Palace, the Accademia which holds Michelangelo's David, and some other really amazing churches.
Whichever you chose you will definately enjoy, but like I said, Florence has more to offer you. Have fun!

In my opinion you should visit Florence city as it is situated in the most famous and beautiful region Tuscany.

Florence...much more to see and do...as much if not more history...less touristy.

I would say it depends on your interests and company. If it is a romantic trip, venice is really perfect (although certainly Florence too can be romantic). Florence is larger and more city-like, so if you are going with friends, it might have more to offer. Both are great for art-lovers, although the list of to-sees in Florence is probably larger.

This is easy.........................You can easily spend 2 weeks in Italy and still miss so very much. Not only are both cities magnificent but the ares surrounding them are exciting. Especially from Florence you can take day trips....And you didn't even mention ROME. How can you go to Italy and not ROME !!!!!

Either one is a good choice - it depends on what your interests are and exactly when you want to come. As others have suggested, it's not hard to go from one to the other on the train if you have enough time. If you're here in the winter, you might prefer Florence - there's a better chance of good weather and there's occassional flooding in Venice. Either one has interesting festivals throughout the year. If you're here at the middle of July, the Il Redentore celebration in Venice is great. At Easter, the Explosion of the Cart in Florence is worth seeing. Both have good Carnevale celebrations, but the one Venice is larger. Actually, a lot of the smaller cities have the best Carnevale - for example, Cento, Viareggio, and Ivrea. If you're coming in the next couple of months, there's the Festa della Salute (celebrating surviving the plague) in Venice and the Festival dei Popoli (People Festival) in Florence. You can take a bike tour of the Chianti wine country from Florence or ride a gondola through the canals in Venice. Either one has great photo ops if you're in to that and art and architecture.

I live about two hours by train from each of them and spend about equal amounts of time in either.

Go to both, split your time, the train ride isn't very long. You won't be sorry.
