Venice or Milan to visit?

My husband & I are planning a trip to Italy in May, and we are going to visit Rome, Florence, Pisa and either Milan or Venice, whichever city we fly into. We'll fly back home out of Rome, but it's cheaper to fly into either Milan or Venice. I've heard people say Milan has nothing and that Venice besides the canals is dumpy. So we need to pick which city to fly into/visit.

Italy would not be complete without a visit to Venice, so without doubt this is the city to visit.

The positives far outweigh the negatives, which is why Venice rates as one of Europe's most visited cities and above Milan for tourist visits. Have a look at the National Tourism site for Italy, accessed here : http://www.tourismrankings.com/Italy/

There's some great hotels, and the images will also give you a sense of what Venice is all about:

Venice. The canals and squares are lovely and St Mark's is well worth a visit (but I suggest you have a coffee or gelato in one of the side-streets, not in the square).

We flew into Milan and spent the day there. Went to see the last supper and a few other things then took the train to Venice. Spent a few days in Venice and absolutely loved it. If you had to pick one, I would pick Venice hands down. It has so much more to see and experience. I did not find the canals dumpy at all and we were there early July and it was in the high 90's.

There is no question about that one.....Definitely Venice!! Don't miss it!!

Of course there are airports in Milan (2, Malpensa and Linate) and Venice (2, Venice and Treviso)
If you are looking for shopping better Milan, but Venice is the most romantic place in the world, absolutely unforgettable, why don't visit both?
I had the luck to live one year in Milan and two in Venice, and my favourite is Venice

Milan is a very beautiful city to live in but Venice is a better city to visit. Venice is very special and it is interesting to. It is also very romantic and exciting. I think you should definitely visit Venice instead of Milan but either way I know you will be happy with what Italy has to offer.

I've been to Italy several times. Unless you're a true "fashionista," and want to visit Italy's fashion capital, I wouldn't miss Venice! It's like nowhere else on earth. How can you go to Italy and not take a gondola ride?!

Besides which, Italians, anywhere you go, are incredibly fashionable!

I can't tell you what a treat you're in for- and don't miss the gelato!

They are both beautiful cities and you will be glad you visited whichever one you choose. I don't recall an airport in Venice. You will probably fly into Milan.

So Milan is a great city, the earth of Italian economy, it' s a cosmopolitan city, kind the other main european cities.....

Venice is unic, I think that for a tourist is more attractive a town as Venice.

after the election. i am proud to say that venice has been the winner. and why shouldn't it be. it has something unic in the world.

Milan, you won't have to put up with the stench of the canals and the bugs.

Milan is ugly and very industrial. Venice is the complete opposite of that, beautiful and romantic. I don't care if I never see Milan again, as for Venice, I hope to go back. Don't believe what people say about Venice being dirty, I was there a year ago, it was very clean, canals and all.
