Visiting Rome for the first time? |
Hi! I plan to head to Italy in November, do you have any suggestions where to stay? I want a hotel not to far from all the attractions and that speaks English! Also if you know of any nice places to visit please let me know. Are the metros there easy to use? Any information is appreciated! I know nothing about Rome! Thanks! |

Have a look at Rentals In Rome.
They rent apartments on a short term basis, ours was great.
The major ones are Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Vatican City, Pantheon, Circus Maximus, Roman Forum/Palatine Hill.
Basilica de San Clement.
Awesome little 12th century church, built on top of 4th century ruins which you can walk through. Must see, it's not far from the Colosseum. We did the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Basilica de San Clement and a couple other churches in one day.
And DON'T MISS the Catacombs. They are underground tunnels where the first Christians buried their dead. We had a guided tour of a section of the Catacombs of San Sebastiano, where Saints Sebastian, Peter and Paul had been buried for varying lengths of time. Great place to visit, even if you're not a Christian [I'm not.]
The metros are pretty easy to use.
A lot of tourist places have people that speak English. We had no troubles communicating with anyone.
Hope that helped! |

I'm so jealous! Rome is where I had my honeymoon last year. We spent one week renting an apartment in Trastevere near Piazza Trilussa. It was the most perfect 7 days I've ever had in my life! Rome is a very walkable city. You can walk the whole perimeter in 3 hours (if you don't linger). Trastevere is a section on the other side of the river. It's easy to walk to all the sights during the day, but quiet at night. During our week (it was in July), there was a street fair along the river every night. And every night in Piazza Trilussa young people hang out on the steps just talking, smoking, drinking - it was a great place to people-watch and get to know the locals! Our best days were once when we went walking around the Forum and then on to the Colosseum, and another when we went to the Vatican. But if I had to pick one "must-see" spot, it's the cat sanctuary at Torre Argentina. I could have spent hours watching the cats :) Anyways, I know you'll have a blast! |

Is better you stay near the heart of the city so you can walk into the street nela Vatican city... but there in really no problems, Rome in very easy to visit and every roman can help you even if you do non speak any word in italian. But Italians know how to explane and help tourists very simply.
Have a nice journey, and drink a cappuccino and eat cornetto with granella (sugar) ... |

hi, I'm italian and i live near venice,
I think Venice is very beautiful for the engaged, but as a city is not very big.
then perhaps you should go rome. Rome is great and there are more things to visit. I think that there are no problems for the language |

I would recommend staying in a chain hotel rather than an independent one because they usually offer free bus services into the city centre. If you search for a hotel in Rome on their website, you will be able to find out how far it is from the city centre and major attractions. Try chains like Holiday Inn, Best Western, Hilton, or something more upscale like Le Meridien. As for attractions in Rome, there are many! The Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Tivoli Gardens, the Spanish Steps, Vatican City and countless other museums, galleries and places of interest. Just do a search for Rome tourist attractions; you'll find something you like! |

I swear by tripadvisor.com. I look for a hotel in the price range that I want and pick one that has a lot of good reviews and I read the bad reviews so I know what can happen.
Hotel Domus Praetoria 85 - 129 euros. 2 bad reviews out of 287 is quite good.
