Visiting Rome, should I really learn Italian?

I am going to Rome for 4 days, possible spending a 5th day in Florence. It's going to be no secret that I am a tourist. Do I really need to spend the money and time learning a new language?

I was looking into Rosetta Stone and it cost about $300 for a basic level. If I buy a basic level, and I will be extremely unhappy spending $300, is that even enough?

Please help!!!!!!!!

No italian people go to school and there they teach lots of foreign languages included english so you won't find any problem is not like the other countries where they know only one language ...in Italy we got a big education in that

No, i just came back from Rome, Naples, and Sicily for work. Most people have a basic understanding of english, and if you know some key italian words, or even some spanish, you should be able to pick it up fast. Besides half the fun is not knowing the language and totally immersing yourself in the local language and culture.

Good luck!

Rome is a big and touristic city and I think that you won't have any problem even if you don't know Italian, in fact in museums, restaurants, hotels, pubs people speak English because tourists=money, so they usually do their best in order to be hospitable and to help tourists, probably their pronunciation and grammar won't be perfect but comprehensible...

Then, if you know some basic phrases and words in Italian, they will appreciate your efforts...

You don't need Rosetta Stone. You could buy a little phrase book of Italian and learn something to get by. Speaking (a little) the local language is always a form of respect for the people you can meet.
And learning a foreign language is not something totally boring and nasty, to do as a task to survive in other countries. It could also become a hobby, a leisure, a way to open one's mind.

I was in Rome in December. My family and I learned some basic phrases with a phrase book and we were fine.

Almost everyone there spoke English that we understood. They were all very nice about it.

Remember, if you learn a phrase such as "where is the restroom" and they respond in Italian, you won't be able to understand the answer!

As long as you know

Buon giorno - I know its spelled wrong and pronounced bon jorno - It meens good day.

& Gratzi - it means thank you

& Excuse - pronounced excusa - excuse me

You will be good, everyone is really friendly

I got an Italian language cd at the local library and listened while I commuted to and from work.

This was plenty.

We were in Rome, Florence, and Venice. If we did not speak a word of Italian, we would have gotten by just fine. Most every one in the hotels and restaraunts spoke enough English to understand.

Learn at least a few phrases, so you can say hello, good bye, thank you, do you speak English, exscuse me, etc, and you will be fine.

Have a great time, The Italian people are wonderful.

Rome is used to tourist so much, so even if you dont know italian you`re very ok in Rome gettin around ...they are also very helpful and friendly people.... ciao

No, you won't need to learn Italian. The Romans have been dealing with foreigners for millennia, I spent a week there and only needed to use it as a courtesy (for please, thank you, the food is delicious, etc.), which is not a bad idea and the locals appreciate it that you take the time and trouble to learn this little aspect of the culture, the few words of their language, but you will find that the ones you deal with speak English quite well, and many of them that don't speak it actively understand it.

Alot of Italians now learn english at school so you should be fine just take a phrase book.
