In Venice, people travel on the water. The buses, taxis, and emergency vehicles are all boats. People also do lots of walking in Venice. There are no cars in the city. They must be left at the car park (parking lot). To get to Venice, you can take a train into the city or fly into Marco Polo Airport and then take a water bus or water taxi into the city.

Hello,

There are a few types of transportation methods in Venice. The first is walking. There are many small alley ways and canals that have foot bridges crossing them so there are no cars in Venice. The next is by boat. There are lots of types of boat but the main form of transportation is by vaporetto. These are basically "water busses" and are what the locals use to get around if not using their own personal boat. These are typically the least expensive way of getting around other than walking. You will mainly see them on the grand canal and circling the islands, not in the smaller canals that run through through the islands. Then there are the "water taxis". These are smaller and more expensive than the "water busses" and you can hire one to pick you up at a hotel or your home just like you would a regular cab. You will also see gondolas in Venice. Typically the gondola is used by tourists and the route is pre-determined before the trip. It is a way of showing tourists the city from the water. There are some gondolas that are used to cross the grand canal by the locals as there are only 3 bridges that cross the grand canal. The locals will stand in the gondola for the trip across the canal as they are used to living on the water and it doesn't scare them. The last is personal boat. There are all sizes of personal boats in Venice from row boats to larger, luxury boats. You can see them tied up in the side canals in front of houses or in front of hotels on the Grand Canal.

You will not find cars or motorcycles in Venice. You will not even find bicycles. There are many, many bridges that must be crossed to get from place to place making bikes impractical. It is also hard to use a stroller in Venice with all the steps that must be taken to get across the bridges.

Boating or walking are basically the two main forms of transportation in Venice.

They use boats mostly.

Venice is basically a bunch of islands in the middle of a lagoon, linked by "canals" and bridges.

Most people use the "Vaporetto", basically a large boat used like a bus. They charge about 5 euros per trip.

You also have water taxis that take you straight to where you want.

The Gondolas are used mostly by tourists and by the locals in very special occasions, like weddings, mostly because it's very expensive..about 80 Euros for 45 min.

There is another type of boat...it's called Traghetto, it's like a gondola with no seats, and you use it to cross the Grand Canal in Venice where there are no bridges. They charge 1 Euro per person.

Finally the local people and the tourists walk a lot since not even bicycles are allowed on the city.

WALKING, or you can tak a boat through. IF you are starting outside of venice, then you can take a train into venice, and then get around. But like i said though, walking is the one Main Way to go. Or if you pay 65 euro you can get your little boat that is rowed by that hard working italian. (i don't remember what the name of those are).. but yeah, and there is many many bridges to go up and down. Enjoy the exercise

The typical Venetian boat is called GONDOLA. Pictures about it:
