How difficult is it (to get around, shop, eat...) when visiting Italy if you don't speak Italian? I am trying to study and pick up a little at least, what would be some key phrases & topics ...
I have been thinking about going on a family holiday to Italy and was wondering if anyone has recently been and knew of any areas which were particularly nice.
Thanks :)...

The spartans were real, but they were not from Rome they were from Greece. The Spartans were the people from the ancient Greek city of Sparta - they were known for their warlike culture.

I'm thinking you may have confused "Spartans" with "gladiators." As you now know (several times over) that Spartans are from Sparta and if you've seen the move "300" you will see a depiction at one of the Spartan's greatest battles at Thermopylae.
Gladiators were slave warriors in the Roman kingdom. They were vigorously trained and often fought to the death for the entertainment of Romans.
The movie "Gladiator" is pretty good entertainment but mostly fiction. I recommend the movie "Spartacus" to see an account of gladiators with some historical context.

You have done a big confusion..Sparta is a town in Peloponneso in Greece..Famous battle of "Termopiles" (termo pili ..in greek hot springs
The war was towards Persians in 395 B.C...In italy the romans where fighting the first "Guerra Punica" towards "Cartagine"..The Romans empire was rising . The town was small..The Colosseum there was no..builded..So the "Spartans" are very far from Rome and gladiators..

Okay then, Spartans where from a city state is southern Greece called Sparta, They where known for being very warlike and training the best soldiers in the world at that time, but they had fallen from their golden age long before the Roman Republic, however Greece ( and Sparta being part of Greece ) did become part of the Roman Empire long after their city state had been conquered by the other Greeks.

first off they were from sparta modern day greece , hence spartans, and they were real but weren't really like the ones in 300

Yes they were. They were built for war. When the olympics were held in olpympia they were the onces who won the most gold medals. The other tribes in Greece was bored by the superior spartans. They kicked the all the other tribes butt.

No... Spartans were allied with Rome... there were no Roman Spartans.
