I use the venere site for booking hotels here in Italy. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/. There are around 600 hotels in Rome in the data base. Prices vary quite a bit depending on what's going on in Rome and it isn't clear what you consider reasonable. I like to stay near the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain or the Pantheon. There will be more of the cheaper places near Roma Termini station. It's a little further out, but still walkable and there are excellent metro and bus connections. In any event, you can pick a specific area within the city and sort by price or rating to find something in your budget.

You might consider this place that's right across from the Forum and just up the street from the Colosseum. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosseum/hotel_romano.html?sd=02&sm=03&sy=2009&ed=04&em=03&ey=2009&rval=1&pval=2#information;swa20090302,20090304,2,1

booking.com Best rates! Trust me Im americano!

Just Tom
Conley below is correct.

go to hotels.com
venere.com
hostelling international (if you don't mind youth hostels)

Use google for the search. You can simply type in "hotels in rome." Good Luck! BTW, pray that the Euro keeps going down. :-)

check hotelclub.com. They have good rates and divide hotels by the area. I have used them couple of times and it was great.

Jami
This is the site I book Hotels, I know this is not very much popular. But My experience with them is great. Their rate is very reasonable and there is loyalty program for discounts, become a member you will get 5 pounds for first booking. time to time they give attractive offers. I had enjoyed several.. even for my birthday they send a gift voucher, but still could not use, may be next year.

Go to this link, it shows all the hotels near Rome City centre.. ( I researched for you... )

http://roomsnet.com/rome_hotels/rome_centre_hotels-S0427-D041.html
if you book with them join to club, then you can have further discounts..
happy vacation

Here is a site that I found that has great information on reasonably priced places to stay in Rome:

I've actually stayed here. It's a fifteen minute walk to the vatican and right next to a bus stop. It's a very simple hotel but has a good price and is very homey (is that a word?) and welcoming. Serves a great breakfast at a good price! Really gives a good idea of Italian life.
