We went to the same cities last summer and stayed at campgrounds. We rented a bungalow in Venice, they had a nice grocery on the grounds and great pools. In Rome we were at Camping Tiber...it's a bit out of the city and I would not recommend this place. In Sorrento we rented a cabin and they also had a grocery, restaurant and transportation. I loved the campgrounds (nothing like they are in the US). We also stayed in Florence in a very nice "trailer". When we go back we will definitely go camping!!!

Hi , I went to Italy in January. We used a website called www.hostelbookers.com it was really good. You type in the country, and cities and there are tons of hostels, B &B's and cheap hotels to choose from. Then you type in the dates you want and it show you the prices from dorm rooms to singles. They all list what ammenties they have and there is also other guest reviews and they have all been rated by previous guests. It worked out really well for us.

Just Tom
go to www.hihostels.com/

it is the website for hostels international.

It's not easy to answer because there is a lot of great places to stay in that cities. Surely if you're going to Venice the best thing you can do is to reserve a room at least one month before by the website www.hostelsclub.com. There you can find a great selection of hostels and B&Bs. Most of theese very cheap and clean! The feedback of the other users will help you to choose the best room... :)
For the other cities you can use the same link or you can also try to find a room without making a reservation because there's a bigger offer of rooms.

I hope this advice to be useful.
Bye,
