It depends where you go, In general July is a very good month as Italians are on vacation on August and that is really a mess: very high prices, too crowded cities, and no space for a single towel along the beaches.... The first part of July is still good. If you like arts, then choose Rome and Florence. They are also not so far from the seeside and you can have some days at the see. A good choice could be also Naples: a lot of very historical places to see (like Pompei, Amalfi) and wanderfull see around. Visit island of Capri or, better, ISCHIA, for a wanderful sea and food trip. Just 1 hour by boat from Naples. Also, the city itself is wanderful. Like all the big cities, remember to mind your pockets... That's all for just two weeks, but I'm sure you will return soon

Went to Italy July of O5 from 12Th of July and stayed a month. We are going back in Sept. but we are disabled and July was a bit warm in Sicily. Even though it was warm, we were in the hottest part on side of MT. Etna and loved every minute. One thing I have to say as we stayed with wife's relatives and they made us comfortable. Southern Italy are behind us as it is harder to get products not made there. My advice is to wing it alone with your family after you know were you want to go in Italy. The people are great and there are some poor areas but also very nice areas. We were lucky because wife's cousin is military police and he new where to take us and where not to take us. He also had ways of getting some very special foods from stores were he walked his beat. My advice is to take out you credit card tonight and buy your tickets and make reservations. I am already looking for the best flights.

I understand that we all do not have the possiblity of choosing the right month to visit a city but I just want to let you know that this coming summer Rome will receive another heat wave like the one in 2003 !!!!!!!!!!! It was not fun!!!!!
You will defintely need a hotel with airconditioning and visiting a city that is constantly fighting with its air quality during the summer there are times you cannot breath!!!!!!!
Try at to come the first week of June !!!! I won't mention Venice or Florence it is worst!!!!

It is so hot in Italy in July!! I grew up spending summers there and would never venture from the coast. My mom lives in Rome now, and comes to the States every summer, because it is much too hot for her. Why not try in the fall? You could book around a holiday and take the kids out of school for a few days. It is beautifull in the fall. I was in rome last Nov, it was almost 70 degrees some days!!!!

Yes, cause it will be way too hot and crowded. But if you must go eat lots of gelato. Early morning and evenings will be the best times to see the sights. You can find local tour guides that offer excursions during these times. Use major cities as your base and spend about 3-4 days each and you can do day long side trips to some surrounding areas if interested. Italy has a lot to offer, but you will enjoy it. Have fun and stay cool.
