We are flying into Nice, then taking a train ride to somewhere in italy to stay for 3 nights...suggestions?

Is there a city between Nice and Rome that would be nice on the coast? And, then, I think we will stay in Rome 2 nights.... and the other city one night...

Any suggestions on where to stay?

I live in Italy between Nice and Genoa...
I could suggest you 5 terre, near la spezia. You can easily get this beautiful place by train. If you like going to the beach there is Alassio, the sand is wonderful, the city is between imperia and savona.
If you like historical place you could go to albenga, near Alassio, a seaside resort with a roman-medioeval centre.
In Tuscany there are seaside resorts like Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi and if you had the time you could go to Isola d'Elba ( an Island near Grosseto ).

This is exactly what I did last month, but I came in from Rome after 7 nights via train to Nice. I wish we could have stopped in Florence for a few nights, so that's what I would suggest for you... I heard its beautiful.

Somewhere on the ligurian coast would be nice. Levanto or Finale are two places that spring to mind

Genoa - check out this underrated city. On the sea, largest Aquarium in Italy, great food.

The Cinque Terre is a beautiful part of Italy...the prettiest town on in that coasta region is Vernazza...but it can be touristy. Corniglia is a bit quieter, and thus a bit more remote. Getting to any of these areas by train may be frustrating since you'll have to switch to local and may even still need a taxi. Pisa or La Spezia would be the closest "big towns" to get to. I had my own car (was living in Europe) so it was easier to get around that way but these links below might give you more info. It's a gorgeous area.
