We are going to Italy for a week or so in Sept. Could anyone reccomend where to go and what to see?

One obvious side trip from Rome is Florence. The trains are frequent and it only takes about an hour and forty minutes on the fast trains. http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ferrovie/util/inglese.jsp

Other possibilities for day trips from Rome include Tivoli, Orvieto, and Ostia Antica. You can also go to Naples or Pompeii as a day trip, but you might want to spend a few days there and see Sorrento and Capri too. Siena is another good choice that's not too far from Rome.

On September, there's the Giostra in Arezzo between Rome and Florence. People from the various neighborhoods parade in medieval costume before competing in the joust. The old town there is pretty interesting even without special events.

If "or so" means you might have up to two weeks, you could make it to Venice and Verona in the north of Italy. There are several interesting events near Verona in September. The rice festival in Isola della Scala and the wine festival in Bardolino (on Lake Garda) are both pretty good. Rome is such a great city that you won't have much need to leave it :)

Inside Rome, consider the following places to visit:
-Vatican City
-Colosseum
-Roman Forum/Ancient ruins
-Pantheon
-Trevi Fountain
-Spanish Steps
-Castel Sant'Angelo
-the new Ara Pacis Museum
-Villa Borghese
-walk around Trastevere
-tons of churches to see (Santa Maria in Trastevere, twin churches in the Piazza del Popolo, Sant'Agnese in Agone in Piazza Navona, San Giovanni in Laterano, etc.)

If you're looking to get out of Rome, there's some smaller towns which are nice:
--Ostia and Ancient Ostia (both easily reached by train; ancient Ostia is like Pompeii, only better preserved and better taken care of; an entire ancient city that you can walk around with a cool museum, although I've only been inside the museum once as all the other times it was closed)
--Palestrina (there's a great archaeological museum as well as beautiful views of the countryside, plus the city is built into the side of a large hill -- the entire town is terraced. It's quite breathtaking and peaceful; can be reached by bus or car)
--Tivoli -- (Villa d'Este and Hardrian's Villa -- I think you can reach by train and/or bus, but can't remember)
-- Fregene/Maccarese (can be reached by train/car -- a small town with a nice beach, quiet and a good place to pass a few hours; not terribly exciting in the convential sense, but in the summer/early spring/late fall a lot of beach restaurants and clubs are open)

If you're looking to go farther afield, there's Florence, as someone mentioned. Napoli (Naples) is nice too. Orvieto. Assisi. You can probably learn more from a good guidebook.

definitely go to see the Colosseum.
its the only thing you have to pay to see in Rome
but its worth it. also if you have time go to Pompeii
but do not stay in Naples. if you do stay near the
beach, the downtown area isn't very nice.

also just to let u kno. italy is realitivly small.. it fits into NSW about 3times. so if u want to travel it wont take u all that long to get around. one hour traveling can get u to totally different surroundings.

It depends if you want to stay in real touristy places, cities, or in the countryside.
