Wearing Shorts in Italy?

shorts are not appropriate in Italy in churches and any religious place. They are also not appropriate in certain restaurants -it depends on the level of the restaurant of course-. If you are a woman you may wear shorts anyway (in restaurants but not in the churches) if you are a man, you'd rather wear longer trounsers if you want to look formal. It depends on what places you are going to go to. It is not a matter of being offensive in general. It is a matter of going where; places. Yes, people are hot but as they don't go with their bathing suit to the office, same way they don't go with shorts to certain places. As a foreign tourist, anyway, you're mainly excused but anyway be sure you won't be let in a church with shorts in any case. Hope my answer is of help.

you can wear shorts and flip flops in Italy, just not in the churches. its only considered offensive in the churches. ive been there 5 times! trust me...

It seems a sort of legend about shorts in Italy is somehow born...
Very recently more than one person asked the same, I really can't realize how's possible somebody came out wit this :)

As said by other users, you have to care so much about what you wear just if you're going in a church (or some high level restaurants, true, but I suppose the same apply where you live); during summer you can wear shorts, miniskirts, going topless (well, on a beach :) whatever you want. If you do during winter, people may look at you wondering how you manage to withstand chilliness :), but offended, no way!

In the curch is NOT good education to do it
But unfortunately everybody does It
Only problem maybe other Girls look at you with an envy eye if you're cute

i live in italy, im 21 and i wear short shorts and shorter skirts. haha no problem. just not in churches. also flip flops arent cute here, wear a sandal instead. I mean, italy is famous for shoes and flip fops are made of plastic. so try anything else and youre golden.

Footballers in Italy wear shorts when they play and people don't find it offensive, and football (soccer) is the biggest sport in Italy. So I doubt they'd find it offensive if you wore them.

well i think the best thing to wear is cargo pants or long shorts (like caprie's)
