Italy is wonderful country. You are only there for a short time so it is bit difficult to suggest things.
As far as Scuba Diving - Portofino is the only destination I know - When I was in Portofino many years ago - I was not a Scuba Diver.
Rome is great place to visit if you like history - the old Roman ruins are very close to the center of the city. You can visit the colloseum. Venice is a wonderful place to visit. If you go there make sure to the Murano Glass factories - fantastic blown glass art work. Go to Florence you see the famous scluptures, which you may have seen in the history books. Italy is great place to visit.
Ahh - Italian food - It's great everywhere - it's nothing like what you eat here in US. Northern Italian food id is very different from Southern Italian food.

Northern Italy starts cooling off a bit in October - November. Southern Italy stays much warmer in general. So in Rome you find it warmer. If you can give specific location - you may find more detailed answers about them.

since you will be in Naples you should DEFINITELY go to the island of Capri which is about an hour boat ride from Naples

i went to Italy this past summer and Capri was the prettiest place in Italy that i visited!!

If you enjoy a good deal at that time of year you can check out the possibilities of chartering a sailboat from Naples. The Italian coast line is stunning and Naples has a very strong tradition of boating.

The weather at that time of year is chilly in the evenings with chances of showers and sunshine so what ever you decide to do, make sure your prepared. Oh and get your self a phrase book or get a course in speaking Italian!

I would agree that Capri is a great place to visit. You can get the boat from Molo Beverello. Another place to visit is Pompeii. You can get there on the Circumvesuviana train from Naples. Erculano is also a stop on the same route and is worth seeing. It was buried by the same eruption of Vesuvius as Pompeii. The first time I went to Pompeii was in the same period of the year that you'll be there. It was great because the weather was really nice. In the summer, it can be very hot. You can also get to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana train. From there, you can take the bus or a boat further along the Amalfi Coast if you want.

Around the time of year you'll be here, you can expect high temperatures in the range 16 - 21 deg C (61 - 70 deg F). September through November is the rainiest part of the year though. You might want to bring a small folding umbrella you can stick in a pocket or purse.
