Hi i am Italian, so i can tell =)

if you want clean water and long beaches A BIG NO NO would be the north of Italy, so try to avoid it!
the best destinations are on my opinion: Sardegna(if you dont have any economic problems i would say Costa Smeralda is a diamond, but if you want to spend less money try the south of the isle!!) also the Amalfi coast is really beautyful and the north of Sicily like for example Palermo (also more economic)

Have a good trip!!!

psychokreame
i know its not on the main land but its got the cleanest beaches i've ever seen, Sardinia

leynard
i prefer sicily and sardinia... but they are not on the mainland

on the mainland.... I believe that Tuscany has the cleanest sea and offers a great nightlife also.

by the way the best of all is Capri, but you' ll need a lot of money .. Capri is a little stunning island paridise and has a great nightlife also

Yes, Sardegna is beautiful, but everyone knows! and it's really expensive, especially Costa Smeralda.
I think the most beautiful water is in Puglia, it's amazing! and there people is much more friendly!

valinalavelina
Absolutely Sardinia!!! But there are very beautiful beaches on the mainland expecially in Puglia, Salento (south east) or in Calabria (south west). Other beautiful islands are near Naples (Capri, Ischia) or in the east cost (Tremiti islands).

Puglia is still very undiscovered and has beautiful beaches and lovely hot weather in the summer. I was there last july and around midday it as over 40°c

Google up these places on Google images, and have a look at the gorgeous beaches:

Pescoluse
Torre vado
Gallipoli
Santa maria di leuca
Otranto

in Sardegna absolutely!

Ciao!

Without a doubt in undiscovered Maremma, Italy in both Tuscany and Lazio.

Maremma is the south eastern part of Tuscany, and has over 250 km of spectacular coastline with the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Nearly the whole of Maremma is a natural park or protected nature reserve and it hosts the - officially - most beautiful beach in Italy: the white sand cove of Cala Violina, whose fine white sands emit the sounds of a violin when you walk on them. I am not kidding, it IS true (but you need to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when there are very little visitors). The waters there are crystal clear emerald green and turquoise and you can see the sandy bottom and the fishes when you take a swim. It is protected as well from the afternoon winds, so a great place to pass a whole day...

Then there is the neighouring rocky bays of Cala Martina...

Or the spectacular Marina di Alberese beach...

Or Torre Mozza...

The list is long and each one offers a different experience.

In the summer season many of the main town beaches are covered in parasols and "bagni" facilities, but even during July and August, if you want something less crowded and natural, just take a short drive and walk a little while and you will have coves to relax in that are backed by shadey "pinetas" pine trees... with a few palm trees here or there.

I use to live outside of Tirrenia (in Tuscany). The Beach there was nice. They also not to far from there had a beautiful cliff area you could go to a steep walk, but well worth it.

Richard P
I've only been to the beach's close to Monfalcone. These were nice.

jerryone_it
avoid the north?BOLLOCKS!! in northern italy we have an amazing coast line for example: LIGURIA ,it's a region in the north west that stretches form the french border till tuscany(5 terre is veri famous, porto venere any many others),some parts of tuscany coast are gorgeous 2 viareggio(wich is more for posh poeple) still in tuscany ELBA island is beautifull or the beaches around grosseto province. And as someone said Sardinia but also corsica wich is not in italian but at the sametime a worderfull island just before sardinia

If you look for beautiful sea and beaches, the best are in Sardinia and in Sicily.
If you look for fun and nightlife, the North and the center of the peninsula (Romagna, Veneto, Tuscany...) are better.
