What's best to do in Rome for 4 days trip there.?

it really depends on what you enjoy.... are you into sightseeing the churches? do you want to see those that are off the beaten path?! the forum, pantheon, collesium, Vatican (along with the tombs in the basement) are the traidtional things and wonderful.
then there are the ther places -- the Scala Santa - Holy Stiarcase, the Borgo Pio - strip along side the Vatican main drag with lots of shops, bakeries & trattoria's.
take the metro - it was safe and easy
do watch your stuff for pick pockets - but it wasn't as bad a "all that"
make sure if you give to the street panhandlers you give enough - otherwise they will throw it back at you (seriously!)
walk through the ghetto, through traveresti and up to the Jannilcum Hill.
Stroll through the Piazza Navona munching on roasted chestnuts while looking at the art.
take a real suitcase becuase you'll need it after.
if you're a diet soda-a-holic - take your own as they don't sell diet anything.
if you like sweet-n-low or others take your own
their is a book by Knopf Mapguide - it was outstanding! pocket size too with detailed maps of the areas.
get a small journal or note book to take notes on what you see where
if you walk out to the back area of San Pietro in Vincolli becareful not to make a wrong turn or you'll end up by the prision (honestly)

OOH at the Vatcan - the museum tour is wonderful! I recommend - before you get in - there is a little coffee shop "kitty corner" from the entrance - stop there for a coffee and restroom break! take notes inside unless you've a great memory. when in the Sistine chapel - look closely at the last judgement in the lower right hand corner - you will see the bishop that made Michelangelo come back and put "clothes" on the figures - he has the donkey ears and snake wrapped around him!
when you're in the Basicilla itself - do to the left up near the altar and you'll see the entrance to the papal tombs and the tomb of St Peter -- this was something to see!
send a postcard from vatican city - their little post office is to the right when you walk into the city.

when leaving St Peters - there is a street that runs along the right - spirito santo - walk along to find the church by the same name. go inside and see one of the cielings Michelangelo painted - most people have never seen it.
hang onto your euro coins in the .50 & 100 denominations - you'll need them to light the lights around the art work and such.
Ooh - there is a place that looks like a giant wedding cake - Vitorrio Emmunal II - it's their tomb of the unknown soldier and museum - it was quite enjoyable to see.

can i come with you.. i have been but its such a great place i would love to go again..there are all the ancient sites..the vatican..the basilica..the Cistern chapel..the spanish steps..theres load s to do

The forum and the paletine hill are amazing and probably one of the obvious places to go.

We spent a week in Rome and found it quite exhausting walking everywhere make sure you take a really really good pair of walking shoes, if there are any ladies going especially! Your feet will thank you for it!

The other place I found intersting was Villa Borghese. It'll give you a break from all the hustle and bustle of Rome.

i went travelling there last year and we found a great pub it's on the way to the chariot cercit which really is nothing but green grass theres a little pub called the english oak it's not what you think and they give you tons of three food!!!!!

I've been to Rome twice in the past year. Both times I was only there for 4-5 days. I found that I was able to see and learn a lot the first time there by going on a couple of organized tours of the city in the mornings and then exploring on my own in the afternoons in the areas that I wanted to take a closer look. This website is a pretty good indicator of some of the tours available: http://www.viator.com/Rome/d511-ttd. Of course, this website is meant for information purposes. You can find tour agencies once you're there that may offer a wider range of tours.

Certainly check out these must-see sights: Colosseum, Vatican City and St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza della Reppublica, Roman Forum, Castle St. Angelo, Villa Borghese, Spanish Steps, Piazza Venezia. Take some time to get some lunch/dinner in Trastevere -- they have great food without all the tourist markup.

I would also recommend getting a good-sized, detailed map of the city in order to help yourself get around alone. Take a trip to your local bookstore and check out the fold-out maps. I got good use out of the Rome FlexiMap by Insight Maps (available at Barnes & Noble stores and online).

TIP: Don't eat a restaurant in which the waiters are out front trying to lure you in to eat. These places are directed at unsuspecting tourists.

Just walk. Get a good map of the city and see the sights. The Forum, Colisseum, the Vatican and St. Peter's, Villa Borghesi, the catacombs, Tivoli, etc.
Just stroll around with no plans, stop in at neighborhood cafes when you want a refreshment. Eat at different restaurants.

We did all the obvious,4 days wont give you much chance to do anything else,i agree with the first writer about the hard rock cafe ,its great.

My tip to you is watch out for thieves ,we were robbed of our handbags within 2 hours of getting there

Hi,,, yes,, try out the Hard Rock Cafe,,, it is pretty nice and the food is ok.. for something different.. and if you want to spend the big bucks,, try going to the Hilton there,,

Better watch out for the pickpockets there also,, they are good!!!
