Rome, no question. It has some magical places such as Piazza Navona, The Pantheon (go to one of the gelaterias near there. They are amazing!), Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, the Roman Forum, the Spanish Steps, and of course, the Vatican. If you're looking for a good smaller, lest-touristy city, go to Siena. It has nice town square where a yearly horse race takes place, the Palio. If you want a really laid back place with awesome beaches and crystal blue water, go to the island of Sardinia. It's gorgeous!

Florence was my favorite! The shopping in the markets was wonderful, the food was great, and all that you could see was just amazing! The walk up inside the Duomo was one I will never forget, the view of the dome and from the top of it were incredible. The Boboli Gardens were so beautiful, and it was only early spring. I thought by far it was more beautiful and relaxed than Rome just for the simplicity it contained.

Rome. The amount of history there is just amazing. There is no where in the western world quite like the ruins in Rome. They're so beautiful and thought-provoking. Just to walk around somewhere that old. The more modern stuff is great too.

I love for Rome because it has a great mix: ruins, romance and art. You also have good connections for day trips to other cities and exploring the countryside.

Venice is Venice - not place like it & it is spectacular. However you don't need more than 2-3 days there. Same with Florence. Of course this is just my opinon. I'm sure there are some people screaming at their computers as they read this. : )

Rome because there is so much history
Florence because the food is wonderful

And go somewhere in Sicily (I suggest Palermo) just because it's beautiful and the shopping is pretty inexpensive

Depends what you're looking for ... although many people like venice, i found it actually quite smelly (in summer, although winter is much better), and very touristic.

There are places like Sorrento & Positano, which are on the coast (near to each other), very beautiful, terribly romantic, wonderfully relaxed and, coincidentally, a great place to learn italian (as I did)... a really good italian "city" to chill out in.

For me ... I love Rome for its history, life, culture, excitement & variety - you could stay there forever and not run out of things you wanted to go out and do that day.

ROME --- its so magical. I like the Trevi. Rome is sooo wonderful when it rains. I also like Venezia --- the place aura is so welcoming. I just love ITALY!

Padova. Its a great city in itself but also it's fairly close to Venice so you can see Venice without the expense of staying in Venice.
