What's the best thing to do in Venice?
My partner and I are spending a week in Venice next month. We like experiencing the history of a place and tend not to like the typical tourist activities. What's the best thing to do in Venice if you've not been before?
Even if you're not into tourist activites, St. Marks is a must. Just stop by for a little visit.
My favorite thing to do in Venice is to get lost. You're on an island, so you can't get too lost, but there are so many canals and bridges and you never know what you're going to stumble upon. The architecture, colors, canals... it's all amazing and so unlike anywhere else you'll ever go.
One of my favorite spots is the Scala Contarini del Bovolo (http://www.scalabovolo.org/bovolo2.html). It's one of the few places in Venice where you have a view over the rooftops to St. Marks, the lagoon, and back to the mainland... and the spot where my fiance' proposed!
Buon viaggio!

Do yourself a major league favor, be a tourist just this once. Do everything the guide book says, drink a little too much wine, ride the gondola even if it's just around the block, and for heavens sake, BRING A CAMERA! This wonder is disappearing at an alarming rate, and it is simply NOT to be missed!

Visit the glassworks in the bay. It's reachable by gondola.

Just get in a gondola and they will take you to the best places.

I would recommend taking the Vaporetto (water-bus) to Burano. You only need to spend an hour or so to walk around to see all the colorfully painted houses and the leaning tower. Bring your camera. Burano is an island off Venice and is about a 30-minute ride on the Vaporetto (not expensive).
